My normal commute, but I have long-since abandoned the road for the path, even in its current state.

+1 - think we discussed this, and had decided, unilaterally, that we couldnt take the road any more - surface is brutal and we both had concerns that the road, rather than a car, would cause us damage - says it all really.

I have given up FixMyStreeting it.

Hope the cyclist is ok.

@Min, your point re the car A frames/Pillars - they are thicker as many now contain air bags - I notice it in mine, and its a lot worse than 10 years ago - its ironic that its a safety feature which is particularly unsafe for other road users!!

We have our satnav low centre, just above the dash level directly below the rear view mirror, when solo it blocks little or no view of the road but is easy to glance at, when a passenger is in they can watch it and tell the driver where to go.

Min,

Yes, our Volvo 940 is largely the same as the 140s from the 1960s and it's much better for visibility at junctions. The windscreen is more vertical than modern ones and the pillars are not in the way.

The V40 has exactly the problem you describe as does my dad's S80. I assume the windscreen rake lowers their drag.

SatNav on the windscreen means you don't have to look away from the road as much when you want to check the screen. I've got it at the very bottom right corner of the windscreen, almost resting on the top of the dashboard.

Using it in Edinburgh means I've seen bits of town I wouldn't have been in otherwise. It's also good for answering the weans when they ask "Are we there yet?" I can give them distance to a 1/10 of a mile and an ETA.

its on my commute(when I could cycle!)
That right turn is a real danger in the AM(and probably all day)
drivers go to the far right lane, then swing left on the turn. or vice versa

And I am increasinly exasperated by drivers who make things worse by sticking Satnavs to their windscreens.

Saw one the other day that was directly in front of the driver, I think the idea was that they could look over the top of it. I was looking at them in my rear view mittor and their face from the nose down was obscured by it.

I hope they are okay.

As someone who has never owned a car but occasionally hires them it has become very obvious in recent years that cars now have extremely thick A pillars which makes seeing out of them more difficult. Going round right hand bends is the worst as there is really no way to see if there is anything coming towards you. Coming out of a junction you need to lean forward to ensure it is clear rather that just drive over anyone in your way but I don't suppose every driver does this.

The last car we hired had the speedometer in front of the passenger so it was barely visible from the drivers seat unless you craned your neck to see it.

If basic smidsy then there's no excuse.

Maybe, but I fear modern car design makes SMIDSY more common, mostly due to the Euro NCAP front end collision requirement. The easy way to meet this requirement is to give the vehicle thick A-pillars (the ones either side of the windscreen) and the blind-spots created can be huge. It's very difficult to be aware of the effect because the brain compensates for gaps in the visual field.

Have a look at this. I certainly approach cars in the second and third collumn with extra caution since I became aware of this problem and I won't buy another Toyota Yaris either.

When I came past, Bankhead Drive was closed between South Gyle Access and Broomhouse Roundabout and the Police collision unit + 2 other cars and a pair of motorbikes were on the scene.

The road was closed in direction of the Gyle and traffic was being rerouted up towards Calder Road and then back down past Stevenson/Napier/Bank of Scotland.
