I gave up going this way on the way home (it would be quicker, and the rest of the ride more pleasant than my current route), precisely because of traffic queueing up at Murieston trying to turn onto Dalry Road. The road here has parking on both sides and is so narrow as to make filtering absolutely impossible. The only options are to either scoot up the wrong lane on the outside (often possible, but dangerous as there's nowhere to pull into if something starts coming) or to get off and push it up the pavement, which is faster and safer but inconvenient and it's not always easy to get back onto the road.

So desperate are motorists to turn into and out of Murieston that they take far too many risks. Seen cyclists (including myself) come close to getting wiped out because someone thought their clever "shortcut" might save them 20 seconds.

It's a narrow, residential street with a children's playpark in the central triangle. It's shocking that is a two-way officially sanctioned through-route with parking on both sides. The other side of the triangle is one-way which is a slight improvement.

Today at 5-30pm traffic was backed-up heading North along Russell Rd from the Roseburn St junction right back to the Royal Mail offices/Haymarket depot entrance!

Just shows how much traffic is rat running through there. I feel sorry for the poor residents of Muireston Crescent/Place/Road, their lives must be totally blighted by it. It must be hard for them to even cross the road to get to the lovely park that is bounded on all sides by roads used by these rat runners

I agree the A8/Roseburn St/Russell Rd junction could do with a redesign. Perhaps they could extend the traffic lights to cover all of the roads, instead of just the A8/Roseburn St.?

However, the underlying problem is the volume of traffic on Russell Rd which is also being used as a rat run. It would be much easier, cheaper & effective to cure the cause rather than the symptoms (the cause being Russell Rd rat running).

While the Haymarket junction is closed, I think it's fair play for Russell Rd to be used as a 'bypass'. Once Haymarket reopens, I think steps should be taken to limit through traffic on Russell Rd and especially the residential section of Muireston.

The other day I saw a car trying to make a right turn out of Russell Rd onto Roseburn St by going to the right of the traffic island (i.e. on the wrong side of the road!), while there was a car on the left of the traffic island already waiting to turn right!

When I gesticulated his error, he then tried to reverse back. Some people just shouldn't be allowed to drive.

" avoiding the left-turn traffic light at the exit of Roseburn St on to the A8 (it has a filter anyway!)"

There's no filter there - just a standard green.

In the car, in days of yore, I used to use the rat run. I never do anymore. When coming from Russel lRoad I always watch which cars behind me /do/ use the rat run. Even when I get 'stuck' at red I find I'm invariably faster than them.

I think part of the problem is that turning right out of Russell Road is 'tricky'. Invariably to avoid getting stuck there for all eternity you have to turn half left onto Roseburn St then hard right to join the queue at the lights.

In my opinion the junction needs a redesign. Perhaps turning right from the A8 should take you onto Russell Road with a further right hand turn required to go down Roseburn Street?

And of course, block off the rat run.

Roseburn Gardens has been shut to traffic for roadworks this week...

Roseburn Place is part of the 'quiet' cycle route connecting the Corstophine path to the Roseburn path. Unfortunately, in combination with Roseburn Gardens, it is used as a nasty rat-run. All so that drivers can save a few seconds by avoiding the left-turn traffic light at the exit of Roseburn St on to the A8 (it has a filter anyway!)

Anyway, Roseburn Place is now lovely and quiet, and it's hilarious watching all the rat runners have to make a difficult u-turn, or drive a long way round the block.

CEC really should block up this rat run permanently.

For what it's worth, EdinburghTrams has responded to my request for information on the triple/quadruple switchback path at the corner of Russell Road. Not a very comprehensive response, it must be said; ET explained the reason but didn't answer any of my detailed questions about design standards.

Line 3 to Granton is currently shelved. That means the works north of the new tram bridge at RR is also currently shelved. The tram bridge also occupies some of the space formerly belonging to the original switchback path, meaning there was less space than before to construct temporary (and ET did use that word, albeit rather creatively) access to the NEPN, and in order to comply with gradient regs, it has three hairpin turns. So if you trikers and tandemmers and recumbenteers don't like it, well that's just tough, and you'll have to go the long way round.

Temporary, eh? This is Edinburgh, I know how that'll work.

Went that way this morning, there was 1 car using it, doing the rat run (along signed cycle route) from Roseburn Street along Roseburn Place and Roseburn Gardens then onto the Corstorphine Road to avoid the left turn at the lights outside the Roseburn Bar. I thought to myself that Roseburn Gardens really should be either one way or a dead end to prevent this (you already can't right turn into it from Roseburn Terrace without doing a U-turn around the pedestrian crossing island).

I suppose it will take a wee while for it to register in the consciousness of drivers that it's open again.

As a key entry route to the Roseburn path this could have been made so much better for cyclists. The previous turn onto the pavement was a textbook study of how not to do cycle infrastructure. Now with a longer darker tunnel of bridges is the time to re-do this.
Mind you the proposed pram ramp onto the path supposes that bikes come in one size, go in one direction and never meet on corners.
I can't think of anything touched by the tram that has improved matters for cyclists so far.
