I find it works the other way round. eg 5 yr old needs 6/7 year old length, but 3/4 year old waist size, so elastic w/buttons is the only way to make her clothes not fall off. ditto my shorts (less extreme, but still cinched more tight than a standard 'small' waist)

Marks and Spencer's do hidden elastic in their gents chinos, let's you think you are a certain waist size a bit lower than reality but whilst still feeling comfy. Obviously you need to be over 40

I ordered a sleeveless merino underlayer from MEC (a canadian coop), which seems very nice (and ethical etc).

My mother then gave me a long sleeved merino top she'd got at Costco v. cheap. Also seemed great.

Good to know SRD

I am wearing a fantastic icebreaker merino wool long sleeved top which cost £28 instead of £100. There is a supply of them at a certain out of town shop but they are all in medium. I will be going back for some more and will find out what other items are available from the container. I am told, even heavier top, base layers and running clothes. I do not know how odour resistant they will be but Sir Peter. Blake reports on the label he wore his for 40 days and forty nights and did not get whiffy!

My final birthday gifts arrived today, and included 3 books on the tour de france and a pair of Novara Bonita shorts.

Sadly, the shorts are not only not available in the UK, I may have gotten one of the last pairs available anywhere.

I chose them because every single person who reviewed them loved them (all reviews either 4 or 5/5). And because, not only were they slightly loose fitting, but they also have a chamois liner.

And, best of all, they have an adjustable waistband. Yay! This is basically hidden elastic with velcro tabs on both sides (outside). Think discreet button elastic for grownups. Just what we all keep saying we want in trouser waists.

Sorry I can't encourage you all to rush out and buy them :(
