You can still see the 'British Rubber Corp' or whatever it was sign above the door on one of the still-standing buildings. Must grab a pic to put on this thread...

As a brewery site, it's not that historic. It's more historic as a former rubber mill. For most of its life, the Fountain Brewery was on the other side of Dundee street, under what is now Fountainpark / Springside.

To be honest though I'm sure you could describe any old bit of land in Edinburgh as "historic". The land is quite old after all!

Also, haven't they mothballed the other half of the Springside development already? Why would the newly vacant land next to already vacant land that has been vacant for some time be any more likely to get developed? Or are the developers queuing up to by the empty land cheap at the bottom of the market and sit on it until things (hopefully) pick up again and they can cram in as many tiny wee "executive apartments" as possible. Perhaps I'm missing something. Undoubtedly I am.

"
SEVEN bidders, including Miller Group, are fighting over a historic former brewery site in the heart of Edinburgh that had been planned as a global headquarters for HBOS before the banking crisis.

The area, which housed the Fountain Brewery until it was shut in 2005, has attracted strong interest despite the depressed conditions in the commercial property market.

There've been a few threads about development along the canal, so thought people might be interested in this from the EEN:

Business and arts development planned for former brewery site

PLANS have been drawn up for a new hub for the creative industries and the performing arts on the site of Scottish & Newcastle's former brewing plant at Fountainbridge.

The brewery has lain empty since it was shut more than five years ago.

Plans by HBOS for a major new office complex were put on hold by the banking crisis.

Now the site could become a new cultural quarter for performers, artists, designers, computer gaming experts and architects, complete with major indoor and outdoor performance areas.
