"If you have to park outwith the velodrome and some kid asks you for a fiver to 'look after' your car, seriously, give them it!"

Then there's the joke about the flash guy in his expensive, flash, car who parked and, when approached by a local 'entrepreneur' for cash to look after his motor, said "No, my rottweiler is in the back seat and he always makes sure no-one touches my car. It will be ok"
"An' kin yer rottie pit oot fires tae, mister?" was the smart reply.

I'm almost inclined to believe the conversation happened!

Shuttle buses worked fine for us. They tended to wait till there almost full before leaving.. They depart from stand 28/29 of Buchanan Bus station, which if you come from Queens St is the Hanover St end, so you don't need to walk up Buchanan st, if you want a shorter walk or in a hurry. Added bonus for us.. Our 10 year old got chatting with Shane Sutton who kindly gave us tickets for Sunday....We're going back....Yippee..

According to this thread on Singletrackworld, there should be adequate parking at the Velodrome. It's unclear to what extent the parking is policed by enterprising locals though.

Oooh, hadn't clocked the location at all. I thought it was part of an arena complex they were building at the SECC.

Well, at least the velodrome will inject some cash directly into the local economy. As Baldcyclist suggests, the local "entrepreneurs" are likely to be out in force. :(

Oddly, the website says "Glasgow Velodrome Parking offers 415 car parking spaces with 26 disabled bays and overflow space across at Celtic Park." maybe they're all in use by the competitors?

No the Velodrome is in east Glasgow, near Parkhead. It's a "regeneraion area" - last time I went through (Rugtommcat and I's infamous attempt at Route 75) it was lots of streets with no houses left and the odd abandoned old tenement block.

SECC is in the west down on the river.

I agree with WC..

As there are 4 of us going, my first instinct was to take the car for time and cost reasons.. But as I haven't been to the Velodrome before, I didn't know about parking , and it's not clear from the info on the website.

However as we're making it a day of it, we don't really have time pressure so will take the train and shuttle bus.. I would consider taking bike/train, but it seems risky given that we're going at commuting times in morning/afternoon, and expect it's a lottery on whether we can get them on trains..

My journey is likely to consist of hobbling from my kitchen to my living room sofa, seeing as I don't have any tickets. :( If the BBC is to be believed though, the view from my sofa is going to be pretty good (apart from Saturday for some reason?) and the beer is very reasonably priced. ;o)

Because door-to-dorr is easier by car...

Bus to Waverley, Waverley to Queen Street, Shuttle Bus to velodrome will take twice as long (especially as the velodrome is on the east side) so we're not actually going in to Glasgow. Shuttle bus will also be packed heading back the way, so likely to be queues for that (and one of the reasons I cycle everywhere in the city is because I don't particularly like public transport - I'm an anti-social sod).

Basically in the car I'll be at Harthill by the time I'm getting on a train at Waverley, and I'll be in the velodrome by the time I'd be arriving at Queen Street. If you have the choice...

But then I realise I'm a minority in preferring to drive in these instances.

I know many here will think it's great that there's no car parking, but seems odd for a multi-thousands venue that, judging by the shuttle buses, isn't well served by existing public transport links...

I'll be there Sunday. By the time I finally managed to get through online/phone/courier pigeon there were only unallocated seats left (aka the cheap seats), which is fine, 'cept Sunday is an all'day affair, and we're not getting there till 2.30-3ish (when the finals start happening) so gonna be squeezing in somewhere.

Looking forward to seeing this stuff live - hoping the men's sprint is as explosive as it looks on the telly. Not sure what the photography will be like from wherever we wind up sitting, but I'll figure something out.

Tickets went on general sale on TicketMaster at 11 today. I've got a pair for the 18th - appears to be unreserved seating (looks like all the lower down reserved stuff has already gone), and for the 18th is for the whole day (other days have separate morning and evening tickets). So should have finals galore to watch.

Interesting chance to see the new Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome as well.
