I have a feeling that the details of the Freedom of the City of Edinburgh are contained in a local Private or Personal Act. I couldn't find anything on CEC's website though.

But although Marguerite Wood's article about The Burgess Roll also doesn't explain what freedoms might be bestowed, I did find a reference to an Archibald Macauley who, as a burgess gained "the license to conduct business there and to enjoy the benefits of a 'monopoly in commerce and manufactures'."

I wonder what else Freedom covers?

What does Freedom of the City actually mean? Can he pasture his sheep on the meadows and take his donkey on the trams?

Cheaper than making any inroads or spending any money on infrastructure into improving the actual roads for all. Again, after a week cycling in N Ireland, which was an absolute joy due to fantastic road surfaces and cycle ways, paths and shared pavements for miles....coming off the train and having to cycle four miles home was a nightmare. St Mary's St, not the best surface as it is cobbled anyway is just a disgrace, as is the Pleasance, and the all the way out to the RIE. As well as very aggressive driving to contend with. I was actually wondering why anyone in their right mind would want to cycle in Edinburgh or indeed East or West Lothian where no money has been spent for years on the roads.

@mjg I'd like to see him try. Mind you, given that his is a fixie with no brakes, he'd just [get] some comments about being a hipster...
Like. Lots.

If I were him I'd step up to receive it, than as they passed the key/certificate?? make a point of refussing to accept it saying 'Edinburgh is no cycling city and cite the number of cyclists killed on Edinburgh roads and the appalling disjointed half arsed state of the cycle infrastructure in the capital'.

Egg squarely on the cooncil's face!
