You could try this page for a rough idea:

CRC shoes priced from low to high: MTB and road.

That said, for a good while I rode wearing hiking boots plugged into toe clips, but eventually went to SPDs with some trainer-style mtb shoes.

Yeah I used to wear my Merrells. They are great on a platform pedal: stiff sole and grippy. I find they are not good with toe clips: too bulky around the toe.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. @Insto, I looked at those but they don't have my size.
I will check out bowling and tennis shoes but a cursory look at the web seems still quite dear.
Will keep an eye on lidl etc.
In the meantime if anyone has any other recommendations?

In the small time between getting shoes and fitting my crank brothers pedals I found using stiff soled (road type) shoes without clips a bit alarming. They don't grip the pedals in any way so can feel a bit

Guess the MTB shoes are a bit rubbery-er and would give a bit more purchase.

There are lots of cheap trekking shoes around which have reasonably thick/stiff soles, and they ought to last a good while if mostly used for pedalling.

Toeclips here.

Lidl do cycling shoes from time to time (but not in their last lot of cycling stuff). Adequate + cheap = value for money.

Otherwise, sale bottom of the range Shimano "MTB" shoes; slighlty more expensive, slighlty longer lasting.

I have the same dilemma, being a flat pedal (or touring pedal plus toeclips/straps) kinda guy. I tend to find bowling shoes (ten-pin), basketball boots (proper ones, not Converse All-Stars canvas) and tennis shoes work quite well. Bowling shoes best for combination of sole stiffness, grip, and comfort.

I've been looking around for vintage leather 1960s cycling shoes but they're all in weird sizes or expensive...
