I particularly liked the visible proof that cars are dangerous - look how much damage they can do to vulnerable road users if the car is driven into them...

I was out with the scouts cycling in the dark last night. Twenty four twelve year olds. On roads with some cars and off road. Not risk free and one minor injury where one scout tried to cycle through the reservoir run off channel. a calculated risk. I imagine some of the fishermen and dognwalkers/ drivers thought we were pushing it. I tend to factor in what something will look like to others. Thus even if I think it safe, I weigh up what it looks like from the outside. Not always but it is a factor. None of that justifies what the big black car was up to?

OMLG, this is probably the worst bit of hack reporting I've seen in an age. And I see a lot of hack reporting these days.

So lets look at the facts...

- Person legally riding bike in city.
- Footage of bus stopping safely behind trailer shown three times, underlining that the bus could clearly see the trailer and stop behind it.
- They keep saying it's a congested traffic zone, therefore traffic should be moving slowly.
- The crash test is at 60kph - 10 kph above the 50 speed limit on city roads, far higher than every
- The trailer is described as a canvas bag.
- They get a presenter from 2GB (which is one of those hacky talkback stations that attract every 'cist and phobe going) as their expert.
- Journalist editorialises by saying "This should be illegal" pre-empting the expert.
- Expert talks of lack of visibility, when the footage shows the person is pretty bloody visible.

The only illegal transport was the loser in the black car tailgating her in the bus lane.

Jings, a Brompton towing a kid in a trailer. This is news?

I don't bother strapping mine in anymore, they know not to get out when it's moving.

They don't wear hats.

They do sometimes carry the Flip and video the passing traffic.

I might not pay any heed to the US inspired manufacturer's speed limit of 10 mph because it can do 30 downhill and that's more fun for boys.

Number 4 has occasionally travelled upside down because it's fun. He also tried putting his finger on the road. Apparently it hurts.

I've got no interest in going to Australia but I sometimes wonder if they really can be that crazy for cars.

Yep, I've had tuts from drivers who felt it inappropriate for the kids to be on the road. Usually just as they attempt to "door" the kids...

It always smacks of "oops, I've made a mistake, must find someone else to blame."

Does tend to leave a sour taste in the mouth though, no matter how thick skinned you may be!

I was recently informed that there shouldn't be a segregated cycle lane from my village to Rosyth because it will only encourage children to cycle and it's too dangerous for children to cycle. Err, duh!

Bit of a hoo-ha about a 'bad mother' cycling with her child in a trailer in downtown Sydney:

http://aca.ninemsn.com.au/article.aspx?id=8524906

Way to go, cognitive dissonance!

Here's a cyclists' response:

And the mother's side of the story (being harrassed by two folk in an SUV for 15 minutes) which pre-dates the TV spot:

http://www.sydneycyclist.com/forum/topics/child-endangerment-verbally-abused-filmed

All this seems to have inspired a story arc in the Yehuda Moon comic (now free for all to read once more):

http://yehudamoon.com/08292012-dangerous-intersection/
