I usually follow the following list... (although based more on working on yachts)
a) screws?
b) Dowells?
c) does it lift forwards then up?
d) Does it tilt?
e) If all of the above fails it's likely that there has been some sort of seizing event, which has stuck it on. Try a bit of brute force and ignorance. Usually manifested as a screwdriver in a joint to see if you can get any sort of leverage, this will tell you if it's meant to come off but stuck or you just haven't found the right way.

Good luck!

Okay, toilet's running continously. I know perfectly well how to fix it, except I can't get the top off it. Any suggestions? I've never encountered this befre. always in the past the top just lifts off, but ths is a new water-saving toilet, and we cannot seem to get the top to open.
