It's all very well cycling being fashionable. The problem (as I argued in &#60;a href=&#34;http://invisiblevisibleman.blogspot.co.uk/2012/09/farewell-to-london-where-cyclings.html&#34;&#62;this recent blogpost&#60;/a&#62;) is that politicians seem to want cyclists around only to make their cities look cool and sophisticated. When there was more money around, they used to want tram systems for the same reason.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;What they don't seem to want is actual, real cyclists who take up real space on roads, annoy motorists just by being there and have real, practical needs. They're not prepared to tell motorists they've got to give up some road space, keep a proper distance from cyclists and behave decently towards them. They want cyclists that look pretty like cyclists in an architect's drawing, not real, in-a-hurry-I've-got-to-get-to-work people on bikes.&#60;/em&#62;
