Trundled round and collected 3x25kg of naturally round stone from steveo. Around halfway to his I noticed that the low-slung rear light on the MTB is completely obscured by the recycle box on the trailer unless you're already overtaking me, so Steve kindly donated a couple of blinkies to get me home in one piece. We like Steve. He's a good egg.

The amount of surge on the trailer when it's so laden is pretty disconcerting. Ruggtomcat reports that it's nothing like as bad when recumbent, and certainly I noticed it's worse if you're out the saddle. Maybe if you don't want to go laidback, the compromise would be beach cruiser.

For the lulz, I took it to the top of Ashley Terrace, and found the 20.3" bottom gear of the tractor too spinny, so bumped it up to 27.1" until things got interesting although still pretty comfy.

Kudos to the drivers behind me on Slateford-into-Ashley Terrace; they must have figured out that I was hauling something unusually burly from how sluggishly I was setting off and gave me oodles of room.

Ah, that would make sense.

There's already speculation as to what nonsense you're going to turn up with, Dave. I personally think you'll go for maximum unpredictability and carry freely naught but a carbon-fibre bottle cage just to confound expectations.

@chdot: Isn't the internet wonderful?

Hrm. It seems they're only 25kg-ish bags. They look about the same size as the 40kg ones I packed for my summer job when I was a student, but those memories are 14 years old now and apparently faulty.

That now raises the budget to £5.43. It's annoying because there's obviously huge amounts of free heavy stuff lying all over the place, but it's usually all mank, and I want to keep the Bullitt shiny clean.

Tomorrow, if I'm not too tired from East Fortune I'll head to the Sighthill recycling and see how easy it is to take the ballast slabs out of washing machines.

It's for the PY cargo meeting. As long as it fits these criteria, it really doesn't matter what it is.

Criteria:

1) About 80kg of it
2) Not hugely bulky.
3) Easy to transfer between bike and trailers
4) Unlikely to damage or soil a bike/trailer
5) Cheaper than £3.62.

£3.62 is the price of two 40kg-ish bags of concrete ballast from the Wickes down the road. Bizarrely it appears to be more expensive to buy loose sandbags that I could fill with free dirt than to pay for the aggregate itself.

The ideal thing would be weight training plates or dumbells, and infuriatingly I kept 80kg of them in my flat for years, but when my knees busted I gave them away. The aggregate bags look to be a close second.

If anyone happens to be planning DIY or gardening that need aggregates or compost, then I'll get it and sell it on to you.
