The other bit of the argument was around the current state of the infrastructure too. I agree if the infrastructure was improved and better thought out it would not be a problem. While the old railway paths and canal are good, we still have plenty of cycle lanes that abruptly end at junctions never to be seen again on the other side. The political will is absent to do what we see in other European cities and to be honest, I doubt it will get towards Copenhagen levels of infrastructure without a serious step change that only the increasing unaffordability of car ownership will bring.

Agree also on middle meadows walk and the North Edinburgh and Water of Leith paths are other good examples of shared use pahs.

Taking cyclists off the road means that drivers will feel that the road is their domain and make cycling more risky

Yet that's exactly what they've done in certain European cities, and cycling has flourished. The thing is that taking cyclists off the road and putting them on bits of old pavement that have been redesignated as cycle paths isn't the right action. The cycle paths have to be so good and connectable that people prefer to use them over the equivalent road route. The national policy has to operate in favour of the more vulnerable.

It's not about lack of space, it's about having the political cojones to reallocate space. MMW is so convenient for helping people get to where they want to go that cyclists and pedestrians use it all the time. The Stenhouse-Broomhouse-EDP path is mostly completely unfit for purpose.

Comments are worth a read too.

My view on this is that shared space and cycle only space is critical. Taking cyclists off the road means that drivers will feel that the road is their domain and make cycling more risky as a result.
