"As for installing suicide nets..."
Wheeee - boing...
So they effectively not have
movie theatres (empty)
restaurants (empty)
swimming pools (empty)
fun play bouncy nets (full)

hmm, once full wouldn't they be dangerous again?

And the solution seems to be to increase pay by 30%. That's all very well, but why not keep the pay the same, reduce the hours and employ more staff?

As for installing suicide nets...

I love the way Steve Jobs defends the working conditions "You go in this place and it's a factory but, my gosh, they've got restaurants and movie theatres and hospitals and swimming pools"

Yeah Steve but they work 12 hour days, 6 days a week - they don't have TIME to eat or swim or watch movies

Breaking Away is just about to become available on Love Film, I have it on my reserve list. Wonder if it will stand the test of time? It was great at the Johnstone High School Film Club in 1979 (actually I think I have misremembered that and just saw it on the telly, which sadly is the risk I run with my Love Film selections - the disc arrives just after the film has been on telly).

Another variable is my dad's garage which has some of my kit in it (old wheels, bikes and so on).

The trike space requirement is not a constant as it can sit up on its back wheels beside the freezer. It spent six months in my dad's greenhouse until the winter ice prompted me to bring it into service.

One folding bike is inside the house unless it's a nice day in which case it will be out with me. The memsahib uses this as a sort of barometer.

The folders in the garage isn't folded at the moment but the one in the roofbox is.I was thinking about getting dropped off in town and going to the pictures but the times didn't work out so I'll go later in the week.

wee folding bike's equation could be (N x P/2)/(N+P/2) + 1 or similar

where N is number of non-folding bikes and P is number of folding bikes kept folded. (Assuming any/all folding bikes are kept folded? and a folded bike counts as half a bike)

assuming we wish to spend time on this and assuming limited storage/access capacities

"It works better with 11"

er

You mean when n = 11?

If so what's the "better"?

When n=several n+1 is statistically less significant.

Then the relevant equations relate to volume - and factoring in the close packing/surface damage continuum.

Are there probablity calculations about pedals in spokes and consequent time delays?

Yes, clearly not good - especially as it's been going on for a while and the cause (or not) is still uncertain. Chemicals have been 'implicated' at another Apple supplier.

The electronics industry has never been particularly green or clean. There have been concerns about workers' health in Scotland in the past.

Anyone in 'the west' who buys 'stuff' - cheap clothes, bikes/bits, consumer glitz can be sure they have bought something made in places/conditions they might not approve of - unless they do a lot of research.

Large companies are lied to (even if they aren't turning blind eyes). Then there are issues of mining of scarce resources, transport energy issues - never mind the electricity footprint of the Internet. ('Solution' - renewable energy with all the 'waste' heat used for district heating. And that'll be when???)

There are certainly no simple/easy answers to being 'ethical' and having 'low impact' lifestyles.

I believe that Apple is more concerned about 'environmental issues' than many big companies (even if it's only because Greenpeace had a go at them a few years ago.) Likewise I'm sure they will be concerned about the suicides - not just because it's bad PR.

(UPDATE- http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/10/05/26/apple_looking_into_foxconn_suicides_says_it_is_saddened_and_upset.html)

There are many reasons for not buying things like iPhones, but I'm not sure if there are any more ethical brands/products.

Though there are plenty of alternative options.

Just announced - http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/10/05/25/dell_announces_streak_a_5_inch_android_based_ipad_competitor.html
