We went through it on Anth's-Until-He-Got-a-Puncture-Ride on 19/05/2012 where the lack of clear signage resulted in a bit of exploration and backtracking.

I've never ridden there on the grounds that I can get to Glentress quicker (probably), but perhaps should make an exception and find out what the fuss is about.

CCE Corstorphine hill session anyone?

I asked about cycling on the hill in 2008 when I noticed some new signage seemed to accept cycling on the hill tracks, and got this reply from the Ranger Service:

"
the City of Edinburgh Council Ranger Service is currently renewing all signage on Corstorphine Hill. There are new orientation panels in place at most access points and there are also some old signs still in place that have symbols stating no cycling, horse riding etc. yet to be removed. There are also over 6km of new paths round the whole area.

You are quite correct in saying that due to the SOAC, cycling, horse riding etc. is now allowed, the LNR status only protects the area from being developed in any way. Anyone cycling in the area has to carry out this activity in a sympathetic and responsible manner bearing in mind the area is a haven for wildlife and other types of users.

Hope this info. helps, feel free to get back in touch if you have any further questions.
"
I subsequently felt quite smug when I was asked by one dog-walker about taking my bike on the hill and could legitimately back it up! Led to me taking the bike up there regularly (I used to live nearby), though always had to be on the lookout for other users - just a responsible habit. Not been for a couple of years - must go back for a visit.

"By "use" do you know if they mean in a positive or negative manner?"

Good question!

I suspect there is an element of 'conflict'.

There will be people who would like bikes banned, but under Access legislation people have a right to cycle in such places. BUT the right comes with responsibilities.

People (particularly young ones) have always cycled on Corstorphine Hill, now it's legal - if done responsibly. That may mean not cycling at speed across paths walkers use, or causing erosion, or riding in sensitive wildlife areas.

"The ranger service in the pentlands tries to direct mountain bikers to specific paths in their printed materials"

I think that has generally worked. Paths have to be 'closed' sometimes - usually because of erosion after wet weather...

There can also be issues with livestock where it's often irresponsible dog owners who cause problems.

Incidentally -

"
In April 2012, the Countryside Ranger Service merged with the Pentland Hills Ranger Service. Based at the Hermitage of Braid, they are now called the Natural Heritage Service.

"

I picked up a certain policing tone, could just be me. The ranger service in the pentlands tries to direct mountain bikers to specific paths in their printed materials but iin reality there are few rangers, all seem very friendly and incidents minimal

"
In the last few months the Committee have been considering a number of issues including : Commissioning and installing waymarkers on the Hill. We have secured most of the funding we need for this so should be able to take it forward in the next year.
Cycle use on the Hill. We are still waiting to join a Council Working Group on this ,which they assure us will be set up this Autumn when they will have new Ranger staff to participate in the Group.
