I'm sure people are holding on to cars longer and perhaps going for second-hand rather than new (so new registrations fall but total registered vehicles stays high). That can continue indefinitely if ex-hire and fleet cars come up from England to be sold and registered in Scotland.

Mileage and petrol sales are better behavioural indicators. Even if people take to bikes en masse, they'll keep a car.

Thanks for the stas, Insto.

It does seem though that the number of vehicles registered has never been higher and the number of vehicle miles has stayed much the same since the height of the boom.

So much for austerity and cutting back. Drivers are just maybe not refreshing their vehicle quite so often.

They shouldn't get so excited. There have to be blips as cars die and need to be replaced. They should look at the long term trend (figure 2) and observe that the number of new registrations has been falling since 2003 and across the whole series there are surges (in periods of rising trend) or upward turns (in falling trends) every four to six years. The long term trend is still down.
