I could be wrong, but there's a lot of cement mess everywhere under the racks and it feels like the slabs to which the racks are bolted have been levelled, so at least the loaded bike doesn't roll away now.

@AKen I also wonder about abandoned bikes and who leaves them?

The answer of what to do about then is easier send them to the Bike Station. Contact the Environmental Wardens at the City of Edinburgh Council on tel. 0131 200 2000 for help with getting these removed to the Bike Station and they can be re-used or recycled.

I often wonder about abandoned bikes. Who leaves them? I suppose somewhere like Warrender Park they could just be left by students who finish their studies and can't be bothered with the hassle of taking them away. But even so, surely someone else might want them.

What is more perplexing are the bikes abandoned in the center of town. Someone's obviously used them to get there - what happened next?

The Sheffield Stands at Warrender Park Scotmid have been dug up for a few weeks as work men were digging a c. 20 foot deep pit in the pavement to replace some underground contrivance or another. Looks like they're going back very imminently, complete with the 2 bikes that have been abandoned on them for about 6 months.

my thinking is that the new racks at waitrose would be best in front of the window - less risk of theft/vandalism, as well as more room to maneuvre bikes in an out (am I the only person who finds the wall behind the racks a apain?). But then they will be further from the main door. Don't know how much that would discourage people from using them?

Yes, racks need to be concreted into the ground to a depth of something like 12 or 18 inches. You might find that your bike insurance is void if you lock to a stand that doesn't meet those standards.

Mind you, nothing is screwed down to the most determined. I've heard tell of someone whose concrete garage floor was stolen.

I go there anyway what with it being my nearest Supermarket, but now I won't have reason to humm and haww while I lock up the bike and then curse and swear as I try load it up! Result.

I would say that from the photo, it looks like those racks at Haymarket would take only a regular spanner out the toolbox would get them out the ground.

Received this recently -

"
Dear City Cycling Edinburgh,

I have recently been made aware of a tweet in which you tagged Waitrose regarding bike racks outside our branch in Morningside. This is an issue that we have been working on for some time.

I am keen to resolve this situation, and would appreciate your input to guide us in purchasing some additional racking.

"

A small delegation visited yesterday and found the store genuinely keen to add more racks and wanting advice on what sort.

Today this was emailed -

"
Spotted these racks near haymarket this morning and thought they would serve our purpose. This is a modified sheffield, sometimes called an edinburgh rack, because it also has the mid-level rail.

"
