Saw a female cyclist blown off her bike on the lower part of MMW, caught by one of the enormous gusts blowing across the Meadows - she was being assisted by passers by and seemed to be fine.

If it's that windy tomorrow the spray-on Castelli racing top thing is coming out.

I don't care that it looks ridiculous when paired with a touring bike and makes me look like a walking advert. Fed up of sleeves like a pair of drogues...

The wind was more of a challenge in my back on the way up the hill to IKEA than it seemed to be on the way down the hill with it in my face. But the 30kg of ballast I had procured may have helped to stabilise the ship. It takes more than a gust of wind to shift your charted course when you're going fully loaded down a hill. Makes avoiding last minute pot-hole spots a bittie challenging however.

This week has been pretty challenging with the wind. Tuesday was pretty damn raw, had to put three layers on to make it from Leith to Corstorphine without freezing my ass off. Hopefully it'll not last much longer and it's just our usual late-September stormy period come early.

The nice thing about my Friday schedule is that I'm out t'office before the wind dies down. Wrestled my way into work, was carried back on a sedan chair of rearranging atmosphere.

Blimey. Breezey on the way in this morning. Happily low tide, or it'd be definite waves-over-the-road weather.

@chdot thanks for that link.

If you mean Wednesday (OP) then yes, I left the bike at home as well. I don't mind head-winds and tail winds but its the unpredictable side winds that worry me.
Looking out of the office window at the sheets of rain sweeping down Princes Street I felt pretty smug! The train from Musselburgh is pretty good in any case.

"I get my weather data for Edinburgh from here"

That's useful.

"No severe weather warnings have been issued for SW Scotland, Lothian & Borders"

Could be worse then...

For what it's worth, you can get actual (not forecast) wind speed data for Edinburgh Airport here:

http://weather.noaa.gov/weather/current/EGPH.html

And for the Forth Bridge here:

http://www.feta.gov.uk/

Might help with the ol' will-I-or-won't-I decision on those blustery days. Or for bragging afterwards.

Not mine, I recently acquired a newfangled lid with "ventilation" which ensures that my head stays cold on wet, windy days. I'm sure it'd be a joy in its home country (Italy).

Back in Embra, I may have to go the way of the roadie and put a hat on under the helmet as winter wears on.

My main problem with the wind is its infinite-ness, if that's a word. Hills, cobbles, rain, darkness, even traffic and the other impediments to pleasurable cycling are all finite - there's always an end in sight or a workaround. But the wind is always there. Blowing.

But I also had a head wind on the way to work and we go in opposite directions on the same route!

I think there was a lot of gusting. I'm not hopeful that either of us will have a tail wind on the way home.

Now this is a different matter to cycling in the rain. I know a lot of die-hard cyclists who left the bike at home today. Not that I was one of them. Foolhardy? Perhaps, but the pedestrians seemed to be struggling with their brollies more than I was with the bike.

AND it should be a tailwind going home...
