@chdot only function it seemed to serve was to let water into the shell, wash out the grease already in there and corrode the outer casing of the sealed BB

For no good reason than it was obviously a part originally designed for a geared bike, my old singlespeed frame (now the property of Steveo) had a hole drilled in the BB shell where you would affix the cable runner. I assume modern manufacturers aren't immune from the old practice of designing once and using many times when it comes to creating components. There's perhaps no reason for them to be there for your frame, but if the same tube was used on their other frames, it might not be worth their while to go to the effort of not including the holes on some tubes but including them in others?

Could be, though I'd expect race numbers on TCR's rather than the softer OCR's...

I suppose they might be called pump pegs rather than nipples. Anyway chsot's photos is pretty conclusive, but that race number mount could be a pump peg too, no? When it's not helping race numbers to stay on (aided by cable ties it seems).

Frame pump nipple mount or race number mount. Although I've only seen brazed on or band-on nipples before and not screw-in ones, that's not to say they don't exist.

Frame pump nipple mount?

My Mike Kowal frame has it brazed on to the head tube directly. See below for pic with frame pump in position.

I think it may be for a pump. The Zefal hpx is just a little to short to wedge in as you would a traditional frame, but with a little hook thing attached to that mount...

EDIT. Beat me to it ;)

Hello all,
Whilst building up my new audax mount (cheers Baldcyclist!) I noticed that underneath the top tube, about an inch back from the head tube, there is a threaded hole in the frame (think the sort of thing that normally comes in pairs so you can mount water bottle cages).
I've had a scratch of my head, pulled out the splinters and still can't work out what it's for, anyone care to enlighten me?
Cheers chaps and chapesses :-)
