Speaking as an out of townie(!) Yes, it pretty much works. There are some good arterial off road routes which help (Water of Leith walkway, Union Canal (exempt drunk light testing of course)).

As you've discovered, cycling on the pavement(sidewalk) is generally not legal for adults here unless signposted as a shared use path. Whilst cycling in the traffic can be scary, generally it's ok once you understand the conventions and cycle confidently. If you (or others) are unused to it or don't feel confident, one option could be to contact Cycling Scotland ( http://www.cyclingscotland.org/ ) to see about organising some cycle training (the Bikeability scheme is for adults as well as children!). Maybe also an option for students from overseas who are unfamiliar with the differences in traffic laws? ;-)
(You may even find some instructors on the forum here...;-)

Good luck with the survey anyway, and enjoy cycling in our lovely country! :-)

And does it work? The only time I was cycling on the sidewalk Mr Policeman caught me and pointed me back to the road.

Very kind of vitaz to let us fill in the survey but I think we might skew it slightly? Many of us cycle everywhere despite the infrastructure

Hi, I am the student doing this survey:)
I was directed to this discussion to clarify the postcode selection:

The starting point of my research was to look at how accessible are green spaces on the edge of the city to the people who live in central areas (and hence don't have large green spaces at their doorstep). I am looking at how (and if at all) people use and access these areas, what are the obstacles in their access and how these areas could be improved in terms if sustainable accessibility (cycling, walking, public transport).

In short, gembo was right:)

Thank you all for filling it in. If your postcode doesn't match and you would still like to complete it, please write your postcode in the Q.28.

Thanks,
Vita

Ouch not included either...

But in all fairness, if I look out my window I can see Leith links...

So my access to green space... sorted :)

I am included as my postcode is there.

I presume it's just the city centre areas that they are interested in? You folks in the suburbs have loads of green space, cycle paths, etc. so what are you girning about?

Does seem to be about getting to green space and possibly encouraging use of bicycles to get to them, eg what would encourage you to cycle - cycle lanes on roads etc

Nota bene I didn't complete the survey so I haven't compromised Vita slender's research (great name)

Yes, looks like quite a lot of Edinburgh is left out. I wonder why it is so specific? Have they excluded any place that is actually near some green space?

I bombed at the first question. It seems you can only access the green space around Edinburgh if you live inside Edinburgh. #fail

Mr SRD was approached in the meadows on the weekend by a phd student asking if people would complete a survey for their phd about accessibility to green space around edinburgh. I've not completedit yet, but I gather it includes questions on cycling:
