Yes, it pretty much works. There are some good arterial off road routes which help (Water of Leith walkway, Union Canal (exempt drunk light testing of course)).</p> <p>As you've discovered, cycling on the pavement(sidewalk) is generally not legal for adults here unless signposted as a shared use path. Whilst cycling in the traffic can be scary, generally it's ok once you understand the conventions and cycle confidently. If you (or others) are unused to it or don't feel confident, one option could be to contact Cycling Scotland ( <a href="http://www.cyclingscotland.org/" rel="nofollow">http://www.cyclingscotland.org/</a> ) to see about organising some cycle training (the Bikeability scheme is for adults as well as children!).
