A prannock in a Vauxhall did a close overtake this evening.

I had set off from my place down our quietish street, and pulled out into the right side of the left hand lane, indicating to turn right with my arm fully outstretched. The junction with Easter Road is maybe 50 yards away tops. Then a car zooms past me a couple of inches from my fingertips: as he does I look round to mouth WTF?

He cuts me up, then brakes hard, not even at the junction. He's blocking my way so I pull alongside. As he winds the window down, I ask him what that was all about. He gives the classic cager line "You were in the middle of the road!" as though this merited a punishment pass on a quiet cul-de-sac. I replied, "No, you are in the middle of the road." He is, he's not even moving, but blocking the street. "Oh, f**k off you p***k" is the eloquent retort, then the engine revs and he's off, turning right 10 yards on. I follow him around, calling after him a request that he learn the Highway Code before next venturing out in his vehicle (this peppered with a few choice invectives å la Tourette's).

Obviously I have to mind my Ps and Qs near my own home as regards cycling in the middle of the road and getting in the way of <strike>almighty God</strike> hard-pressed motorists. I need to learn my place or I will be punished.

Thing is, those cushions - esp in portobello area (my parents live nearby) are specifically designed so that the desire line for a car driver is disrupted - and hence encouraging slowing down.

Some drivers take this as a personal challenge to take the best / fastest straddle option (usually left, near a parked motor)without considering anyone else.

I really think they are quite dangerous. Drove down past porty high school on saturday and it reaffirmed my opinion.

I had a tweet along those lines lined up kappers!

It's noticeable that the second set of cushions, where I think there's space to go over the left hand cushion, he swerves over the middle one.

I note that as soon (or before) they pass you, the brake lights are on. If you have to pass someone and immediately brake, you don't have to pass them

we have them near my house, i drive right across them, in my 15 yo car, ive seen peoples in shiny new, super tuff landrovers and other 4x4s, actually stop while i get past so they can straddle them ,and not ................bounce their springs ?
I refer to recumbodnas comment, exactly, what a tool !

incidentally the nice angled aproach to these cusions are great launch ramps when I am on the bike !quick bunny hop and you can avoid them altogether !

I think they'd have been inclined to straddle the cushion under all conditions - forcing oncoming vehicles out of the way any time they had to use the middle one...

I hate those little road cushions. Drivers seem to be so concerned with getting their wheels squarely on each side they could be overtaking an elephant doing the fandango and they'd give it the same amount of room.
