From the map it does look like an obvious link to make. Unfortunately here it does currently seem to be pie in the sky (*) but it doesn't need to be. Here are a few recent bicycle bridges, a small sample out of what I gather is a fairly big number:

Eindhoven's floating cycle roundabout

Nescio Bridge, Amsterdam

Dordrecht bicycle bridges

Wooden bicycle drawbridge in Den Bosch

and so on. And then there are the hundreds of underpasses under railways and major roads. Once government understands the value of getting people out of their cars, the sky's the limit.

(*) The only bicycle bridge I've heard about round here is the one over the Sheriffhall Roundabout - the bridge for which hundreds of thousands of pounds was allocated but which mysteriously didn't get built.

SRD - not canal, but in a similar vein (and still your back yard) I have always thought the path along Harrison Place is a bit under utilised - does it still end in a fence? Pity as it is only about 100 yards from Meggetgate - I cant help think it could be a possible link from Harrison Park into WOL path/asda. Would need a bridge though, so a bit pie in the sky.....

Yes, the Gibson terrace access will be implemented (ie paid for) by the developer who is developing the site (student flats, I believe). residents and residents association feeling rather hard done by.

The council presumes/hopes the scrapyard will close, and that they can similarly require a canal access as part of proposals for development (more student flats presumably).

Apparently there is also talk of a NEW cycle-pedestrian bridge nr viewforth.

But I would like to see access at Yeaman place so that families in that area can access canal to Harrison Park and canal commutes, as families in (leafy) Shandon, Craiglockhart etc already can.

Despite living beside the canal, Polwarth families have very limited access to it, and it provides useful routes to very few places. An access at yeaman Place would change that - eg taking Bruntsfield kids to football practice on saturdays - think of the difference with reduced car parking on Harrison Road!

But even more importantly, it would provide a viable off-road access to the new Boroughmuir site for a sizeable chunk of the catchment.

Gibson terrace would be nice but looking at a map Yeaman Pl would be much better spaced. Gibson isn't that far from Viewforth but Yeaman to either Viewforth or access at Harrison park is quite a walk.

I'm pretty sure that there is going to be access at Gibson Terrace - I must have seen it on some sign/poster in the area. There's a forum being set up for people who are interested in the redevelopment of the whole Fountainbridge brewery site - there's a notice about it next to the canal in the Cargo area - or along a bit where the fence next to the empty area starts, I can't quite remember where I saw it but it was somewhere there.

Please don't be tempted by a pun based on "Yeah Man". That would be incredinburghy cringeworthy!

I noticed last time I was up this way that the Dalton For <strike>S</strike>crap sign had been painted out and wondered if it had closed.

My dad grew up on Bryson Road and then Caledonian Crescent, there had been a rag and bone merchant or scrapyard in there since as long as he could remember.

It would be nice to think that with redevelopment of the Fountain Brewery distribution / barrelling site that access could be at least provided from Gibson Terrace, opening up an otherwise dead end (a bonus for cycling as it means not competing with through-route cars)

Read elsewhere that one possibility is if scrapyard closes.

Didn't realise how much (potential) backgreen space it took up.

Must be plenty of residents who would rather see access to the towpath.

As discussed on petitions thread, i think we're going to take forward a small local campaign for canal access at Yeaman place. there are various complexities and it is clear that the council is committed to improving canal access at Viewforth, and at the harrison park entrances, and there will also be a new access at Gibson terrace, but this still leaves the dense housing on the southside of the canal without a good access.

Would be grateful to receive suggestions for a slogan, logo, or other graphic design support.

Thanks!
