CCE has been asked to be a partner in "a project around winter cycling".

"
We are initiating this project over the next few weeks and are looking for ambassadors who want to be part of this project and help celebrate and change winter cycling. We dont believe that change happens through telling people - we believe that you have to show them - lead by example. Therefore we will be producing a small film showing the local stories and celebrating what people love about their communities, and the work they're doing around celebrating and changing winter cycling. This will be featured on different online channels to celebrate and bring focus to local communities and help create real change.

"

At n0tice, which is a new social network from The Guardian - kind of like a noticeboard for local communities - we're passionate about cycling and we want to keep people on their bike even through the dark winter months. We shouldn't just focus on the bad things like staying safe on the dark roads, but the great things - how beautiful a city can look in the dark or the feeling of speeding through the rain. In a nutshell, we want to get people together and celebrate what's great about cycling in winter and help make real change about the things that are not so great.

"

"
We have London Cycling Campaign, The Cycle Hub Newcastle, Robert Penn (Cycle Guy column, The Sunday Times) and Chris Catchpole (Cycling Weekly) as partners and would love to inspire Edinburgh folk to stay on their bikes during the colder months,

We appreciate that time is a precious thing for our partners so we’re just asking for their thoughts and experiences on Winter Cycling in a post, and we think yours would be extremely valuable

the post would then be published on the #keepcycling campaign board on n0tice for our launch on Monday

"

WELL - CCE members are known for encouraging each other (and others) to keep cycling through the winter - and whatever the weather generally!

So I'll start a new thread.

Aye, it'll feel a bit nippy on Friday. Frost likely Saturday morning.

If you think the A90 is bad for leaves, try the West Fife Cycle Way. Now that is a lot of leaves. At least on the A90 the many cyclists have worn troughs into the leaves a bit.

Marathon Pluses were fine on the leaves, not a single skid.

Rode in on my Snow tyres this morning, hence the mild weather and as I type I can see blue between the clouds over Fife (The Sun always shines on Fife !!)

Still loads and loads and loads and loads and loads and loads and loads and loads and loads and loads and loads and loads [ intake of breath ] and loads and loads and loads and loads of leaves on the A90 route in. [Sad face] But I can definately say that the placibo effect of having sharp deep tread on my tyres made cycling through the leaves a breeze!

Forcast said a sharp blast of cold air on Friday didn't it?

I was looking at Marathon Winter tyres last night. The site says you should run them gently for 40km on tarmac before the wintery weather comes, to bed in the studs.

It also seems that there's no Winter version of Big Apple tyres, which is what my lovely Paper Bicycle has. Oh well.

Mine aren't going on yet (!). The first day I ride in and find it's icy will be soon enough (although last year I did that and it got milder and milder until summer...)

The main problem with Marathon Winter tyres is that the studs do wear down, making them a relatively expensive proposition. Not that they aren't also decent in tread terms, for the seasonal hazard of leaf piles!

Not content with its dubious claims about cyclists and RLJ, the Institute of Advanced Motoring is now calling for BST+1, "to help make the commute home much safer for all road users; children, cyclists and motorcyclists would benefit most."

So the commute to school/work doesn't matter? But since there is no population north of the Watford Gap it's all fine and dandy. The IAM wants a three year trial!

I don't change my tyres for winter commuting, I'm just less likely to take the cycle path. Roads always gritted, and by the time I come in 7.30 - 9 the cars have done their job and sorted the ice, so only a few days off when snow first falls.

I have Schwabe winter snow tyres (2 rows of studs instead of 4) and like them. I'm going to swap this week from Marathons Plus tyres to my winter snow tyres. As well as having studs on the outside edge of the tyre, they have a great sharp cut thread which makes ridding on the film of wet leaves and mud less slippy.

Do winter tyres grip on ice?

Marathon Winters actually work better on hard stuff (ice, hard packed snow) than softer slush or freshly fallen snow. It's not uncommon to be able to ride up a road on studded tyres when cars are slipping and sliding everywhere. They're not infallible though so don't get too overambitious or you're likely to come unstuck quite spectacularly.
