HCC will urge the Minister to take this opportunity to improve conditions for cyclists in the city, as part of the Government’s commitment to increasing cycling.

Good luck with that. :-(

Aye the ride out of the 'ness is pretty nice, except as you get to the city it routs you through the industrial estate which can get confusing (and have some heavy vehicles on it) but cycling is generally a bit more joined up in the highlands, its a fantastic place to cycle and I think the tourist sensitive highlands have always realized they get a proportion of their visits from touring cyclists.

My commute there was much more fun (and a bit more hilly)!

The platform at Conon Bridge in Ross-shire has been shut since 1960.

The new £600,000 station is to be opened by February 2013, ahead of resurfacing work on the A9's Kessock Bridge at Inverness.

@crowriver, yes, I did actually read the article as being a positive outcome for cyclists, but then managed to sound all negative.

@cb, to be fair, TS gave a fairly detailed response:

During the works, one of the two dedicated paths for cyclists and pedestrians will remain open at all times so there will always be a way for cyclists to get across the bridge.
The main works to the bridge will include the resurfacing of both cycle paths as well as the installation of new additional higher parapet rails.
We will also be spending thousands improving the paths approaching the bridge, including clearing the paths and some resurfacing. We will continue to liaise with Transition Black Isle to ensure cyclists are well catered for while these works are ongoing.

@AKen, as far as I can see, the average wind speed in the Inverness area is pretty much constant throughout the year, the exceptions being January and February*. The spring and autumn gales don't seem much worse than the winter ones either. So if cyclists can hack it most of the time, winter's not going to put them off - barring a major storm, which I presume would stop motorists using the bridge too?

*-Much the same as Edinburgh in fact. Inverness a bit colder, mind you.

They mention the upgrade of cycle and foot paths but I suspect this comes from another budget, and they are just claiming the credit. Our (Fife) coastal path was built and upgraded with a grant from the EU as part of the plan to have a cycle path along the whole of the European coast.

Transport Scotland responds to Kessock Bridge ideas

Cycling is the only idea that is given the thumbs up, probably because it involves no money or effort by Transport Scotland (although they do say they will be spending "thousands" improving the access paths which will probably amount to not very much. That's what I inferred anyway).

Last week, BBC News Scotland online asked for ideas to how people might beat travel disruption caused by months of work to the Kessock Bridge at Inverness. In response, readers have offered both practical and fun suggestions.

"She said: "I suggest that bicycle sheds with CCTV cameras should be set up, so that people could drive to the Kessock Bridge, leave their car and get on their bicycles and cycle into Inverness, and in the evening cycle back again and leave the bicycle in the shed overnight until the next morning, when they will do the same again."
