On that note, I've lost track of the number of those things I've confiscated from wee boys who've worked out that they really are like that assassin bloke's belt in that their edges are sharp once the cover's off.

Not, I grant you, as sharp as I imagine Conrad's belt to be, but still enough to need first aid.

@fimm reflective ankle bands looking very like Mr Cow's example were being given away free at the recent Streets Ahead / Police cycle safety roadshow stall. It was outside my work last week; I got a free pair of ankle bands and my bike security-marked and registered for free.
Sorry this news comes a bit late!

Never having come across this newfangled type of ankle strap before, I was expecting yellow-green plastic strips with velcro, so I was a bit puzzled when I was given what looked like a pair of furry 12" rulers. But it turns out that if you bend them they curl up like magic, like something from a William Gibson book. Splendid.

UM, i thought the plan was you were going to pass them on to K'nik for his attic. And I have a big bag myself that I wouldbe happy to give to you or K'nik. At the time,I believe I simply pointed out that I didn't have room for them in my flat.

I'm PERFECTLY happy for them to stay in your garage, as long as they re-emerge when needed. but that's a bit different than loaning them out.

Evans have a not very bright but very diffused light for £4 at the moment. Ideal for the carradice; due to the way the bag sits the light mounts with the cone of brightness pointing at the road unless its quite full, so a dimmer light which diffuses with in itself works better.

Plus its got a fairly substantial mount for my other light.

@fimm I've got a spare reflective vest I don't use if you want it? It's made out of mesh rather than solid fabric, so is lightweight and breathable. The stripes are solid. If you don't want the vest you could just harvest the reflective stripes from it and use them.

you could buy some Respro retroreflective self-adhesive material for fabrics. Cut the shape out the sheet, remove the sheet covering the sticky side. Apply to fabric. Cool iron. Remove the sheet covering the reflective side. Done.

It's very effective stuff and reasonably hard wearing. Sticks well too (not sure if it would work on a waterproof)

I just use the fluorescent/reflective Nimrod ankle bands, but have a pair for my ankles and a pair for my wrists. Not elasticated but plenty of velcro.

You can buy a hi-viz vest from B&Q for about £3 or something, and cut it up to make things as Uberuce mentioned. I've done that too; the reflective strip sews easily.

@Min, so your rack does not have a rear light mount with bolt holes?

B&M make this bracket which should fit most racks:

Costs more than the light though. :-(

No. Unfortunately, I don't think zipties would work...Laidback bodged my rsp racks on for me with p clips though.(one of the reasons I am bitter about them being so lousy is that he put a tonne of work into it)

The Dahon rack has a bracket for racklights, unlike the blackburn, which needed the bodge.

Zip-tieing the mount onto the rack is very satisfactory solution. Works on my touring bike rack anyway. Just use a decent thickness of tie that won't wear out easily or go brittle and snap.
