Anecdata time - two of the closest calls I've had on the bike have involved cars turning right. (Both at the same junction, incidentally, but I don't think that tells you anything other than I go past that junction quite a lot...) Both classic SMIDSYs. One was in broad daylight, and involved a car turning into the junction, and the other was in the dark involving a car coming out of the junction. I hate it when people turn right parallel with you.

Interesting that the advice for cyclists is "light or reflective" clothing, not high-vis.

Worst thing about the driving-over-a-cyclist-to-turn-right hook is when the driver at the front of a queue goes because the bike is far enough up the road that it is safe, but then the sheep behind him go.

PS-I'm not saying an anti-left hooking campaign wouldn't be a good thing too.

Quite a lot of attention is already given to left hooking though whereas none to the driving-over-a-cyclist-to-turn-right hook. I find these more frightening since there is very little you can do to avoid them and every driver who wants to turn right at a junction you are crossing is a potential risk. I wonder if anyone really will look at statistics to see if the campaign makes a difference?

@amir which is why in my head I was expecting 'when turning left' not 'when turning right'. I guess in the dark with some people not used to driving in the dark yet, they glance for a car headlight and if non turn right, straight into the path of a cyclist. I wonder if its time I got my 21Watt HID lamp out?

Left turning motorists are just as much a hazard in my experience.

The same message is at http://www.streetsaheadedinburgh.org.uk/info/13/campaigns/76/drive_safe_cycle_safe_october_campaign/2
The leaflet can be downloaded: http://www.streetsaheadedinburgh.org.uk/download/downloads/id/56/cyclist_and_driver_leaflet

There will be statistics available to show if right-turning cars are (or are not) involved in a high proportion of cycle collisions locally and/or nationally.
Evaluation has been a big theme lately in road safety campaigning, so perhaps there will be surveys to find out how many drivers/cyclists hear the message/pay any attention to it, followed up by checking the accident statistics to see if there is a reduction in the proportion of injuries caused by right-turning cars?

@DaveC: With my spokes mailout I received an A5 leaflet thing (I think by streets ahead). On one side it said cyclists should use lights and wear bright things, and on the other it said drivers should be careful when turning right (either on to or off roads).

Interesting they're paying for radio adverts too - I'm not completely convinced of their effectiveness compared to (for instance) reducing speeds to 20mph on roads in the city.

... on Forth One this morning. An advert asking drivers turning right (I think??) to watch our for cyclists coming from the opposite direction. I think it was paid for by Streets Ahead? I was in the shower and not really paying attention and when I heard I I was imagining drivers turning left, cutting up cyclists, but they did say Turning Right, unless I mis heard it.
