914?! really?
Looking at wikipedia the lowest in the Atlantic was http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurricane_Wilma at only 882mbar. It seems quite extraordinary to me that the air pressure can vary by up to 12% - I guess it explains how the storms can be so strong.

Anyway, back to work... :)

The storm that caused the Braer tanker to ground in 1993 dipped to 914mBar. The "Great Storm" of 1987 reached "only" 953mBar.

Looking at the Met Office's surface pressure charts, there's a low of 963mBar sitting off the NW of Scotland somewhere in the direction of the Faeroes. Looks like it will hang around for next 5 or so days, moving slowly southwards.

Wonder what the lowest pressure ever recorded in Scotland is?

There was a lot of leaf, twig and branch detritus on the ground this morning. Sounded a bit gusty out last night, but ride in wasn't so bad (crappy Ka driver excepted).

Was caught last night in damp without waterproof. I should really carry both my fleece and the waterproof in case of inaccurate or changable forcasts

Wind through the night was pretty bad I was surprised when I woke up to find it wasn't that bad. I think I've also been caught out by the evening temperature, only brought my waterproof not my heavier jacket.

"Its bloomin baltic out there now. "

According to the KB weather station, the temperature has dropped a lot since I left home this morning and seems to be somewhat lower than the beeb forecast. I didn't plan my wardrobe with cold weather in mind :<

Looks like WC's whisky is gonna help (http://citycyclingedinburgh.info/bbpress/topic.php?id=8774)

Thanks Arellcat and Roibeard for the pressure charts! We've been stuck for pressure charts since the Met Office and BBC began hiding them.

Not looking forward to the ride home. It looks from that magicseaweed site as if the rain will have stopped by 9pm. Don't want to stay in the office that late really...

There is an exceptionally cool app called Living Earth, which shows climatic systems - not pressure sadly, but clouds, temp, wind etc and tracks storms.

The low pressure and little wind suggests that we're in the centre of the weather system. According to my barometer, we're not far from the lowest pressure since records began (a few years ago).

Wetterzentrale's wetterkarte shows what's happening today.

Pressure has been dropping for a week -

I always thought 'low pressure' meant 'stormy'.

It's a bit wet, but almost no wind.
