Every morning drivers go up the cul-de-sac beside the school to drop their children off at the nursery gate despite that being the only way in for everyone whether walking or cycling. Or better, just ban the cars permanently. </p> <p>However it's very encouraging that they're going in the right direction. All they need to do now is make that little conceptual leap - the one that says "hang on - cars <em>aren't necessary</em> in this street!" </p> <p>It's not so long ago that councils wanted to cover the place with new motorways. Remember the Western Relief Road for instance? A motorway linking the M8 to Lothian Road, ISTR. East Lothian council have put various speed and parking restrictions around my local primary school but everybody just carries on driving as badly as usual as there's little or no enforcement. Interestngly last week the head teacher sent a memo to all parents threatening to call in the police unless the 'inconsiderate and dangerous parking' ceases.
