Totally recommend this, although I'm not up for it myself (I did the try-out thing at Meadowbank after the last Olympics). Extremely different to anything else you can do on a bike, and very easy.

You'll be amazed how slowly you can go and remain upright (just try not to be as amazed as me... I found out the limits the hard way!)

+1 from me. I'm 100% keen but can't guarantee to be available, as the wife works every 2nd Saturday. But I'll worry about that if/when dates are being suggested.

Track bikes have 165's I gather and anything longer runs a risk of digging in to all that nice wood - so they tend to restrict the use of the track to 'safe' bikes.

Like Morningsider I'd love to join, other than:-

Never ridden fixed.
Very, very unfit at the moment.

And I once saw what happened to a friend who came off at Meadowbank. Not nice.

And besides, they'd never let me take the 'bent round that...

S'alright, I'm equally unused to sideways sloped surfaces and the closest I've ever got to fixed gear is when I left it a really long time before greasing my freehub.

Morningsider, surely on the contrary it's the perfect place! Beautifully flat surface, adn no sharp turns to make (just follow the arc of the bank) so no toe-overlap issues and so on... AND with a teacher there to help us along!

"
Sherlock Holmes and Moriarty.

In the competition for business, special trains were easy to arrange and were commonplace, both for goods and for passengers. Mail trains were run in connection with transatlantic liners, while passenger specials were used by the rich and famous, and were glamorised in the popular fiction of the time.

I'm in - although I might go and get my accreditation at some point soon as I'm hoping to do some track racing next year. I had a few goes at Edinburgh velodrome a few years back and loved it.

@baldcyclist - When you're riding you are actually perpendicular to the ramp so it's steepness is negligible - honest.

*Wimps out*. Did you see how steep, and high those banks were? I used to 'drop in' to smaller ramps on my skate board as a teenager.

One advantage of age is that it has taught me fear, and I am scared of those banks. Enjoy.

I'll happily lend wintersaurus over weekends in the run-up as a fixed gear trainer. It's got flat bars and I expect it's a lumbering oaf compared to the bikes which are there, but it's fixed, and that's the part that really takes getting used to.
