I'm rarely troubled by dogs but trike back wheels between them and my ankles has caused the odd confused look.

The closest almost-collision I've seen was Dave+Morpheus Vs Floofy Young Black Dog last Sunday. I don't know whether the dog is just silly, or it misjudged the distance or it was baffled by the Morpheus' novel appearance, but it didn't stop until inches away then cringed mightly with tail between legs, and I would swear looked embarrassed about it afterwards.

Dogs being adaptable creatures and swift learners, it gave me a wide berth as I followed up pulling a Carry Freedom seconds later.

I like dogs, so I don't want to hit them. That's why I slow down and pass with extreme care. I'd sooner ride into their owners than the dogs if there wasn't a choice.

Even slowing right down, ringing your bell well in advance, getting owners attention, you still get some mad wee dogs that choose the very last second to come flying out the bushes and land right infront of you.

My very closest almost-dog-collission was on the crummy NCN76 route, between Kincardine and Longannet, when Ruggtomcat and I did a Round-the-Forth. There was a squished plastic bottle on the path which, at the very last moment, a collie lunged out a bush and tried to grab from under my wheel as I rode over it. I think the owner was the most horrified by the situation. Dog was just annoyed I'd ridden over "it's" bottle.

Was it on a short lead, as specified for dogs on any road, path or track shared with cyclists?

I once bust a collar bone dodging a dog flying out of the bushes alongside NCN75, so I'll duck out of this conversation.

Baldie, didnt intend my original post to suggest that doesn't happen - but apparently the commenter'sdog has been actually physically run over twice. I'd have expected at least one, if not both, of those cyclists to have come off (and for the dog to be potentially seriously hurt) - instead there's the suggestion that the cyclists simply ran over the dog and carreid on as if nothing had happened...

All joking aside, we do cycle to fast on cycle paths, this stuff does happen.

I slowed down for a dog on the Meadows yesterday (to <5mph), moved to the side a little to cycle past is at. Guy comes flying towards me yelling "Control your dog", didn't slow down. Thoughtless, he was going far to fast for that situation.

The time I hit a dog that ran out of a hedge into the road I stopped.... I stopped when my face smashed into the road. Then I had to go to hospital to have my ear stitched back on. I was 14 and still have scarring.

I can't read the EEN comments anymore it just depresses me. The them and us bullshit is the worst. We're all just people that do things, some people do different things than others it's called life's rich tapestry.

Tell them it is obviously too dangerous to walk a dog in Edinburgh and so they should just stop. ;-) Well, by their own logic it is!

Agreed.

A friend of mine hit a cat (cats fault, by the way) on a path a few weeks ago, came off quite heavily.

Unless said dog was one of those rat like mini dogs, this sounds like total garbage.

@WC - stop reading the EEN comments, they are all nutters !!

From the commetns on the tramlines:

"I do not own a car and, long ago. accepted that cycling in central Edinburgh is far too dangerous - unless you use the pavement which, although popular, is completely against the law and causes great distress to pedestrians. To date, for example, whilst out walking, my dog has been run down twice by cyclists. On neither occasion did they deign to stop and offer an apology. They appear to think themselves above the law. I consequently find it laughable that they are considering legal proceedings to compensate themselves for their own stupidity. Grow up. If the tramlines are a problem, take an alternative route. You've no divine right to cycle anywhere you choose."

I'm surprised that neither cyclist stopped to apologise. Mainly because I'd have throught they'd be in a crumpled heap on the floor after hitting a dog...
