I was half right as last night the permanent traffic lights had been switched back on. They just didn't bother to do that before switching off the temporary ones.

It makes perfect sense that the service should only be intermittent and so have been on when Dave passed but off when DaveC did later. It no doubt helps traffic flow immensely to just not bother with them at peak times.

I'm not sure I understand which lights are missing here. I ride this way to work and there are still lights controlling Picardy Place -> Broughton Street. (I can't be bothered to upload a streenshot, but I just checked by watching the video back in case I was going mad?).

I cycled to the top of Broughton Street this morning on the way into work. Very handily, the contractors have left the lights (turned off) - but more importantly - the coned off island, where the lights are in the centre of the road. This temporary island acts as a sheild to cyclists wishing to dismount and turn right onto York Place (as pedestrians).

I saw a few folk standing at the top of the Broughton Street, leaving York Place on the north side opp The Street on the corner of Broughton and Picardy just having to wait for a gap in the traffic and take their life in their hands as vehicals took full advantage of the free for all.

What do you expect, this council is on the (Chipwrapper) record saying they'll disable a pedestrian crossing on Lothian Road in some misguided effort to "ease traffic flow" that are only the result of too many cars and too many tramworks and nothing whatsoever to do with pedestrians.

Now her MSP and disabled campaign groups are calling for more consideration to be given to the needs of disabled people when tram works are being carried out.

No, the needs of disabled people (and pedestrians in general) should be taken into consideration for EVERY road works. I am sick of people being run down all the time just for the sake of traffic flow.

Today there were no traffic lights at the junction and it looked as if the ones from the Broughton Street side had actually been pushed aside as if they just weren't being used at all rather than just not working. I hope I am wrong. Pedestrians were left to just run out in between cars to try and get across the road. Disgusting.

(Edit -I mean Broughton Street not Broughton Road)

Thanks for the sympathy but I am trying to get to North Bridge. I have tried it and it is technically quicker than twisty narrow George IV Park and the horrendous Drummond Place but I have to make an unpleasant right turn to get on to Albany St and would still have to walk through St Andrews Square which would make it just as well to get off at the top of Broughton Street and walk up to North Bridge.

As does the state of the only acceptable indirect route. If I wanted to take 10-15 minutes longer to get to work every morning I would just continue with the St Andrew Square Cyclists Dismount crapness. If I wanted to get killed I would just continue with the Broughton Street/Picardy Place crapness.

Seriously, do you think that having ridden through the tramworks every day twice a day for years upon years that I have not thought about this?

I just don't want to do it any more. I give up.

Min, can you take the Queen's Drive-Abbeyhill-Easter Road route perhaps?

On the days I work in Leith, I'll go down Leith Walk, but I'll often come back via Bonnington Road, McDonald Road, Brunswick Road and cutting through to Abbeyhill. I cycled up Leith Walk the other day and it was a horrible experience with so many vehicles ducking and diving, while having to weave my way around all the massive craters.

Not really. I am finding myself very happy to take any excuse not to cycle. Raining? I'll take the bus. Not raining? I'll run. I spent a few months walking through the tramworks but I just can't be bothered any more, it takes up so much time and the Death Zone is so stressful, especially with the new trenches, sunken drains, potholes and lumps of tarmac.

I'm hoping that's hyperbole. If it's not then the fact that a daily, confident, and experienced cyclist is thinking baout giving up really does speak volumes about what this city does (or more accurately doesn't do) for cyclists - and if current cyclists are giving up, then what hope is there for attracting new cyclists.

I'm spoiled for route choices to and from work, and any detour doesn't really add in much distance (and those that are longer tend to be better hill wise, so the time difference isn't there ar all). Which means that any problem on any particular route and it's easy to switch. If I want less traffic I take the Innocent or Regent Road; if I'm happy to mix with the traffic I'll take London Road or the Royal Mile. The only route I avoid as a matter of course is the south Holyrood Park road heading from east to west. Too many nutters overtaking on blind bends for that to ever be enjoyable (fine going in the opposite direction because the speed is so much higher heading downhill).

CEC take note. It's these stupid little discrepancies, like the MMW crossing fiasco as well, that show the true place of cyclists in this city. You are ballsing is up. Big time.

There are just pothole and a massive trench in that area now. Also, slightly further down Broughton Street there is a set of temporary traffic lights at the side of the road that look like they are about to be installed. Goodness knows what new chaos and pointless trenches are going to be dug now.

I am close to giving up cycling now since my only options are to spend 10 minutes walking through tramworks in St Andrew's Square, riding though the trench/pothole/death driver zone that is Broughton/Picardy Place or to take a massive detour.

I am really really really sick of it.

That would obviously be pointless so does this mean that they plan to reuse the structure later?

From Clarence;

Thank you for your contact regarding the works on Broughton Street and the associated temporary bridge structure over the excavation area.

Please find attached a notification regarding these works.

An anti-skid surfacing will be added to this structure this weekend once it is removed for work commencing as this cannot be applied whilst it is on a live traffic lane. Until this time, this surface will be salted during the colder weather.

I would like to thank you for bringing this matter to our attention and would like to assure you that safety to both the workers and the general public is our main priority.

Yes thankyou.

I have seen these big steel plates before with a coating of roughened paint-stuff over them, which would be much more acceptable, also with a little soft, temporary tarmac ramp up onto them, as they're nearly an inch thick and that's quite an obstable if it's a 90-degree edge.

There used to be one near Stenhouse Crossway that was BOLTED to the ground in the greenway lane! so you had an inch of steel plate, with a further inch of bolt heads sitting proud of it. I've reported quite a few of these steel plates before where they've been left on the road covering a hole for months on end. They're not an appropriate surface, even for temporary use.

The excavation under this 'bridge' is to replace an existing Scottish Water manhole which is apparently 100 years old and not up to standard for current/forthcoming requirements. The work is being done as part of the Tram project. 3-way temporary lights will be in place weekday nights and weekends until 9th December approximately, with the 'bridge' in place outwith these working times. I will relay comments & concerns about the surface. Jon

I can't see FB-sourced stuff at work, but from K's reporting, it sounds like it's a slab of steel that doesn't have a coating of anti-skid paint. I remember a few years ago riding over a cover like that and my bike twitching violently at 20mph.

we'll all have to run off to the Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden or northern Germany then

i've settled for travelling to Norway or Germany every couple of months instead.

but its still an uneasy compromise.

Welcome back to the best litlle small country in the ARGHHH
