Well comparing my own Boardman hybrid @ £499 vs the Hoy Shizuoka .001 @ £550
I would say on paper the Boardman has it covered
The Hoy has 8 gears on the rear and a single ring at the front
admittedly hydro vs cable brakes, but the Boardman is a better looking frame IMO
So where does the £50 more come into it?
only a rear gear set & shifter
also missing the vital £500 C2W price point for people like myself

So what do we think so far

Massivley boring design and visually unappealing. I assume nonetheless they are useful and well-specified bikes that do the job you want them to, however I think that Boardman have that sector of the market sewn up.

I just don't see anything (beyond the sticker saying "Hoy") in these bikes that makes them stand out, or hugely desirable. They just look the same as nearly every other compact geometry aluminium road bike that's out there in a crowded market.

One assumes the images are mock ups/prototypes? The article suggests a full Ultegra groupset on the range topper but the image has a different Chainset (can't quite identify it?).

Some pretty tough competition at the price points though! Specialized offer both Allez and Secteur with Tiagra groupset at circa £850 and I know which I'd prefer (all other things being equal).

Apart from the slightly bulging head tube for the (sucks air through teeth) integrated headset thingummer, it looks incredibly like my Cannondale CAAD9 frame. Which is a suitably 2-years old shade of stealth black also.

I do like that they've kept the branding subtle and not covered it in tartan.

"
Announcing the launch of the new brand Sir Chris says he wants the brand to make cycling more accessible to people of all ages: “Cycling has been a central part of my life from an early age and has helped me achieve so much. I want to help more people experience the power and enjoyment of cycling, as well as demystifying it and making it accessible to all. That's why I decided to create a brand that embodies this vision and my passion.”

We’ve no word on pricing of the bikes yet but the three road bikes are being aimed at recreational and sports cyclist, so expect them to be reasonably affordable. And there will be four bikes designed for city commuters and leisure cyclists. Sizing will include youth bikes, getting kids into cycling is clearly an important part of producing a range of bicycles for Chris.

"

Part of me wishes that the new range/brand was available in non-chain bike shops. But the economics of going with Evans make a lot of sense.

I think Chris Boardman has done a lot to make sure 'his' bikes aren't just 'badge engineered' Halfords ones.

From the quotes above it seems Chris Hoy is taking an interest in areas that have been growing in recent years - 'fun' road bikes (not just the hyper-expensive end) and bikes suitable for 'normal' commuting - so obviously they will have mudguards...
