Is that the cyclists bike I saw on the railings at the school?
anyone in touch with them?
I pass there often in the car(sadly)
So could assist with collecting it if need be

I'm not sure trailer wheels have enough grip that they'd go under a vehicle instead of being shunted aside, but I am not a German road safety expert. The thought of child in seat with so far to hit things on the way down gives me the heebies. Every day on frost suddenly a massive gamble.

Still as they say, "as long as you do..."

I've used a trailer on lots of different roads for 9 years. Cars have thus far stayed well away from it.

Just one data point.

Except in this case the car stopped about 50cm passed where the child would have been seated, had the seat be occupied it would've been on top of bonnet not under it...

I can't remember the specifics, but the impression I have is that when the Germans crash tested different ways of carrying your children, trailers came out safer (despite being lower down).

Edited to add: http://www.londonskaters.com/cycling/article-child-trailer-safety.htm

+1 for Aussie adverts. I don't even drive and they made me feel guilty.

Good to hear the child seat appeared to afford decent protection, I've gone for co-pilot limo due to the hamax mounting limitations. Hopefully the crash protection is 1. Good and 2. Never tested.
Fully intend putting "CHILD" in scotchlite tape on the back of it, shouldn't require pointing out but... :-/

Never nice seeing the aftermath of accidents or the real shock and hurt in people. We should be showing Aussie style road safety adverts instead of letting the media etc sugar coat the whole horrible business.

Heard her crying just after, wasn't any thing I could do and there were plenty of help.

I was never keen on kiddy trailers in town but this incident has killed them for me, rear ending is too comon and easy.

Definite +1 for Hamax engineering. The side of it was scraped but the structure looked intact.

It was not fun seeing the distress on the cyclist's face.

Saw your tweets chaps, wheels a mess, she was 'lucky' she didnt have a kid in the seat.

@recombodna, yep I ride that both ways daily - should be ok, but I always try to have all senses on overdrive there - odd how some roads are bad that way.

It's a good bit for the old road rage there. I saw 2 cars J the RL at the slateford road end in the last few days and have twice been "Punished" with the old fast but close overtake because I was cycling in the middle of the lane to avoid the many potholes.... I mean it's not as if there's a primary school there or anything....

Steveo semi-witnessed this as he was borrowing my trailer.

White van man knocked a woman off her bike and wrecked the back wheel. One of the neighbours is a doctor and was on the scene by the time I'd got up there to lend a jacket. Probably taken a broken wrist - she was white as a sheet, anyway.

Not the only driver to clatter up that road too fast - there was already a car rearended in that stretch this morning.
