Ah! Found the insurance (it's not actually posted as part of the transport amount) - £9.40

Okay, last post for a while... Other things we spend more on a week than fruit and veg:

Package holidays abroad £17.10
Pub £7.40
Holiday spending money £7.20
Alcohol at home (got the figure above wrong) £7.30

Hmmmm. I've got the actual table breaking down the costs. Fruit and veg is £7.10 a week (alcohol is £12). I can't actually find a cost for insurance on a car.

"But what they don't plot it against is the average family spend on chips and beer, I bet insurance isn't higher than "convenience" food and alcohol..."

Hmm, we must pay £65 a month to insure the 2 cars, don't know how much we spend of vegetables every month as it just gets spent with the weekly shop.

I do know that we give Sky £90 a month, and eat Chinese / Pizza / junk food of some sort twice a month, so in my case that is probably still true even though I don't drink beer very often (maybe £3 ave on beer every month).

Interesting. I've found a BBC article about the same report in 2011. In that transport costs were about £64 a week; ALL food and non-alcoholic drinks were £53.

Now for transport costs to be a third higher than that spent on fruit and veg the fruit and veg costs would be over £40, meaning that only just over £10 is spent on all the rest of the food and non-alcoholic drinks for the week.

Obviously those are figures for 2010... But it does seem to offer a skewed fruit and veg spend on that basis! (that 2010 article was much more balanced and 'factual' in its reporting, a sign that the BBC is dumbing down.looking for sensationalism?)

Nothing to do with addiction to cars everything to do with peoples spending priorities, as you say we don't eat enough fresh food.

Just shows how insane the addiction to private motor cars is!

Also reveals folk in the UK do not eat enough fruit and veg.

"
Transport costs are eating into family budgets, the ONS says, with spending on car insurance a third higher than the amount spent on fruit and vegetables
