Arf, it's less exciting than it sounds (although the geothermal power station at Taupo is cool!)

Emailed the chap from Cycling Waikato about it and he said: "SH1 is sort of OK".

I would tend to ride on the hard shoulder (I do on SH2 on the way to work and back at the moment). It's usually a bit wider than it is here, and is reasonably uniform in surface and design.

Because most of the state highways are single-laned you need a reserve on the left for right turns (the proper process if there isn't a filter lane is to pull off to the left stop then turn right when the road is clear rather than stop the fast traffic behind you or barrel onto a gravel road at 100kph).

AFAIC it's a reasonable option, but you just have to be aware that cars and trucks will be hurling past you at a great rate. Log trucks are like a pine air freshener for the senses.

Another plus for Cambridge is they are getting a flash new Velodrome.

Wow, you get to cycle down the "Thermal Explorer Highway". It has to be worth it for that alone.

Do cyclists generally cycle in the bit that looks like a mini hard shoulder?:

WIthout being able to get an elevation profile on the googlemap, sounds a bit like a daily commute from around Fisherrow to the Gyle. So yeah, why not! Can always work up from 2 or 3 days a week.
