Excitingly, various spinny-whirly stuff is waiting in the local post office for me to pick up. Less excitingly, this will have to wait until Friday. Ended up going for White Industries cranks and a Surly rear hub (so not really managing the 'cheap rather than good' plan there...)

Any thoughts on rims? 700C/29" 32h, rear with braking surface, front without.

Ah. Yes, they can be a bit of a pain like that, and they are too wide for the bike lockers at work. At home I just keep an allen key next to the cupboard. Loosen stem and swing them round in line with the frame and they become a bit more manageable.

My main annoyance with them is how they don't "integrate" nicely with other bikes in a bike rack - they get in the way of both drop barred bikes and flat barred bikes

I've got Midges on my upright at the moment, and get on with them really well. I may just be odd.

I've found the Midge's are a bit of an annoying compromise of a bar. The Mungos are nicer.

If you want a bullhorn-type thing, I've got a spare Charge Slice bar, but it's a regular clamp rather than the OS size most headsets come with now.

I'm in the final stages of acquiring a Surly Karate Monkey frameset from someone in London, aiming to pick it up on NYE.

This is highly exciting. Not just because of the name.

The plan is to turn it into a singlespeed/fixed 29er/trail/cyclocross thing, covering off as many of the 'things I want to try' as possible in one go. It'll also be the first bike I've built up from the frame, which should be fun.

I'll turn this into a bit of a project thread, and I'm open to suggestions on parts! Especially if those suggestions are accompanied by the part at a second hand price :p

Current thoughts are midge handlebars, front cable disc brake, rear cantilever (it's the old style frame, so should have the fittings), no idea on drivetrain or wheels...

Cheap better than quality at the moment.

Opinions warmly welcomed!
