I tried to cycle along George St this afternoon, too. It was nose to tail from Frederick St to St Andrew Square with no room to filter either. I turned off down Hanover St and went to the German market.

Out of the centre of town, it was much, much quieter. I ended up going along Corstorphine / St John's Road and it seemed to be just myself, the Airport bus and the taxis all jostling for the bus lane. Much quieter in the work car park too and the office was pretty dead. Left work early about 2 to go do some cheese and booze shopping, had to go through George Street which was dreadful. It seems the done thing to do now is just stop your car in the middle of the road and wait for a space to come free.

I'm back down in Hartlepool. Cycled back from durham train station in a near gale yesterday which was rather exciting/scary. There were a few idiot drivers so I was always having to make sure I was waiting for a longing gap, then sprinting whenever there was any sort of blind rise/corner.

However with the wind behind me I must have hit 33+ (ran out of gears) for a good long time on the flat which was ace. Although strava wasn't working so I shall not know :(

Roads were a bit quieter, but not as much as I'd have imagined. Now sat in the office contemplating a bacon roll and the few things I need to get out of my inbox this morning so I can kick back in the afternoon...

Did try and persuade my other half that we could cycle to the mall this morning but our borrowed bikes don't have the carrying capacity. Also cycling to an American mall just feels like doing it wrong, although on the whole the drivers are extremely polite and one thing about having really really wide roads is that there's plenty of space to overtake. I get the impression that the drivers of the monster pickups don't want to have to worry about the strange bike thing so they tend to let you go first so you get out of their way. That said, we've seen a bakfiets and a folder here, so there's obviously some sort of a utility bike culture lurking under the surface.

I shall be cycling to work on Monday. And Thursday, and Friday. And the following Monday. I have to ride 135 miles between tomorrow and the end of the year to get my odometer up to 6000 miles. Eight days of riding available; 17 miles a day should cover it.

Basic hybrids can ride surprisingly well. My Raleigh Pioneer Trail (an early hybrid, okay it's got a reasonably nice lugged brazed steel frame, but still) has done about 1500km since I picked it up for next to nothing in 2011. Yes, I've fitted drop bars but it rode quite nicely with North Road bars too (wasn't keen on the original straight bars mind you).

Oh, no commuting for me until mid-January. ;-)
Still I'll be on the bike(s) (no car, y'see): got to do shopping, utility trips, leisure pootles with kids, training runs, and if the weather's okay a DIY audax the first week after new year.

Minus the front suspension and butterflies, it's a very similar animal. It'll take me to the shops and if the skies clear, I'm only 20 minutes ride from real country dark, so I've taken a pannier and my lights up to go astronoming.

No commutes for me on Monday but taking my bike to the in-laws' as the only adult bike in their garage would embarrass even a ned cycling up the pavement on Easter Road.

Sad but true: I used to love working over Christmas, and especially between Christmas and New Year. Not just the lovely empty trains and quiet roads, but the chance to actually do my own job for a change rather than everybody else's. And then I'd take a break in January when everyone else was back at work (or even better February)
