Pity they're on Fridays: no can do, otherwise I'd be on the wheelbuilding.

I attended the intensive full day course a few years ago. Looks like they added a few things, as I don't remember anything about adjusting bearings at all. We spent quite a bit of time on gear indexing and wheel truing though.

As a result if it's a bearing issue and I can't easily tighten/adjust it's off to the LBS...

I've built loads of wheels since. And although I'm not quick, I like to think I make good strong wheels.

I did the main bike maintenance course 14 years ago. It was quite good and got me started in my fettling career.

I also did the wheel building course in 2001. You had to bring your own parts or buy them from the shop. I built a pair of Mavic F519s on Hope hubs. They lasted 5 years of my cack-handed mountain biking without anything breaking of needing more than a quite true once. Until they were nicked.

I highly recommend the wheel builing course. Very technical and informative. As long as it's the same as 11 years ago.

I wonder what happens to the wheels people build on the course.

I have a feeling the ad for that used to say you could bring your own hub and make wheels to take home.

I'd consider the wheel building, Mr Gow might not be around for ever, but it's during the week.

Some other bits are odd. Does anyone adjust hub bearings anymore… apart from me? Even then I haven't adjusted a BB for 15 years or more.

Gear adjustment might not include SA hubs but then they are fairly easy to adjust if you remember which hub you have. I prefer the 3 speed using the shoulder of the rod to the 5 speeds faint yellow line.
