Sally, as soon as we have somewhere to keep bikes that is out of the rain, we'll invest in brooks, and risk the it and about rains. But for now, it's just not sensible.

Arrelcat, I would take EddieD up on that test - I cant use 'normal' saddles, same issue as you - but B17 narrow is a dream - best saddle ever for me, looking for a broken in one on ebay for my road bike.

Arrelcat - B17 standard or narrow? I have a 17 narrow I can't use*, and could loan you for a (long term) trial...

*it's a long story

I've had the same plastic bag stuffed into the springs of my Brooks for 18 months now - it's quite small so it's a bit of a squeeze onto the saddle and stays on tight. Of course it is a Dutch plastic bag so naturally superior to anything British for cycling purposes ;-)

I'd offer a go on a B-17 standard but I fear you'd have to saw your legs off at the knee to fit any of my bikes, might spoil your pedalling technique :-(

One commute to work and back. My sit bones found it beautifully comfortable straight away, but the backs of my thighs continuously rubbed at the point where the saddle widens out and I couldn't bear it. I'm just too narrow-hipped for the B17 mould.

Perhaps we need a 'CCE saddle circulation list' for trying out saddles we own collectively but don't use ourselves. Last year I went so far as to buy myself a lovely black Brooks B17S and it turned out to be an expensive mistake for my shape. It's sat alongside my old Flite, Rolls and Lithia gel saddles ever since while my recumbent bike sees all the mileage.

Ronde allow you to try out their saddles for a week (for a deposit!)

Might be worth a look.

Looks like time to find a shop that'll let you sit on saddles to see what's comfy then, anything plastic *should* be waterproof(?)

waterproof stuff-sac clips around saddle, doesn't leak, rolls up discreetly under the saddle when not in use so as to never be forgotten. Problem solved :)

You say that but my bum hurt on Friday as the second day on the bike after a fortnight resting. The "toughness" will return quickly enough I'm sure.

It's terribly hard to recommend a saddle (apart from a Brooks) as what works for one derrière might be terrible for the next. Definitely worth looking out something female-specific, and in my opinion padding adds nothing but discomfort, so do not shy away from ones that feel harder to the touch. It's your leg muscles you're sitting on with a saddle really.

The saddle that came with the Helios developed a puncture early on and we are now very tired of perpetually wet bottoms. Can anyone recommend a good quality saddle that can be left outside in the rain? Ideally something on sale.
