My sister had that problem too. She got her Raleigh Record Sprint in 1988, just before the MTB craze arrived in rural Tayside.

Drop bars and skinny tyres became horribly unfashionable soon after, so when my twin and I got our mountain bikes two years later she was always trying to borrow them.

After much abuse and neglect during Uni times, I sold my bike to the now-departed shop down the road from Bike Works for a tenner. Looking back he got a proper steal from me since I'm fairly sure it must have been 531 tubing. I remember slagging my sister off on the grounds that my bike had a higher Reynolds number than hers, and since hers is certainly 501...

Nice review where the journo Helen Pidd reveals that as a child she was given a similar bike for a combined Xmas birthday present and was very pleased with it. Happily cycling along until she turned into the park and found everyone else had been given a mountain bike for Xmas.

She thinks the new one is same as the old one but at least now it is trendy.
