My last encounter (within the last 12 months) with the AA was courtesy of a dangly bit of undercarriage, shoogled loose by Edinburgh's roads. The woman on the other end of the phone was very keen to find out if it was the result of an IMPACT (in which case I would not be covered - and should speak to my insurer) or general wear and tear (in which case she could send a chap along).

Memo to self: don't expect the AA to help unless the car just breaks down - any sort of damage and they're not interested. Someone Else's Problem.

You could try the ETA. They offer all the usual car breakdown and recovery services through local garages but also the same service for cyclists.

@Coxy

Never keen on the AA's lobbying stance

Nationwide Autocentres used to send out an email newsletter - fine at first but then it started taking that Motorists vs Gordon Brown tone. As an advocate of a higher tax model, I was overcome by rage, and emailed them some stern words. You feel a bit mad writing a Dear Autocentres letter but still, it did the trick. They wrote a fine apology and went back to the previous "check your antifreeze" messages. Was quite pleased with that.

@DaveC - what level of cover did you have? When I had AA Relay and crashed into the Findhorn Bridge (it came out of nowhere!) they picked us up and took us and the car 150 miles back to Edinburgh. Free. But that was years ago. May have become more stingy since then.

Never keen on the AA's lobbying stance and support of the "poor beleaguered motorist".

At least the RAC Foundation is independent from the RAC itself.

I holed my sump on a speed bump in the dark. The AA left us to our own means as it was an accident, but did offer to tow me no more than 5 miles to the very nearest garage for £103. Don't think I'll renew.

Got to hand it to @AA_Members. Renewal letter arrives giving us Gold membership 4 loyalty... and doubling annual fee. Nice.
