I rarely even walk to a meeting room for a meeting. It's usually headset on at the desk despite most/all other participants sitting less than 10m away.

The interesting part wasn't so much the sitting / exercising thing but the "My fundamental problem with exercise has always been this: it took time away from other more "productive things.""

The redefinition of exercise as something you go somewhere and spend money to do rather than an everyday aspect of life like, dare I say, cycling or walking to work, has a lot to answer for and I'm not sure that standing meetings are the solution. Not least because not that many people have all that many meetings.

@nelly - sitting smoking in wheelchair at front door? I noticed this during some visits to southern general in Glasgow. Challenging to my smug cycling sensibilities.

@srd I missed the fat busting enzyme. Might be hard to run a control on that as getting up and walking instead of sitting will doubtless bust fat.

The walking together side by side towards the problem / solution was an ok image. Similar to how to get words from teenagers. Work next to them fixing a bike, cycle along beside them chatting and dare I say it sit beside them driving somewhere. All these techniques extract more words from teenagers than face to face scenarios.

I have been visiting at the ERI a few times recently, and there are an amazing number doing both - smoking while in wheelchairs (recuperating post op?)

It seems like its entire families tabbing away sometimes - astonishing really.

The bit I thought was interesting was the bit about the enzymes that burn fat decreasing after sitting for an hour. Was sort of wondering if it was true. Couldn't get it to cut and paste for some reason.

"Inspirative" apparently.

I have some other great ideas

Eat breakfast

Commute to work on a bike

listen more to what people are saying to you and talk less

Take a proper lunch break, including a walk, even around the block

Spend time with your loved ones, just hanging out without trying to do anything that gets stressful

Eat fewer sweeties

Drink less alcohol

When considering any contentious issue, remember to ask yourself Is This A Big Deal or A Little Deal. If it is a little deal, don't get worked up

can I be a guru now?

I assume sitting on your bike doesn't count?

I suspect her definition of "hiking" is different to mine. I mean do they really go out hillwalking or are they just going round the nearest park?

Hiking meetings. Hmm. Very California.

I can see the excuses from colleagues and students right now. "But it's raining/blowing a gale/freezing/dark" etc. Though it must be said, "walk and talk" often happens in corridors.
