I have a couple of the sodium acetate reusable instant heat packs.

Pro tip for camping (especially bivvying) recharge one of these just before bed on the last of your fire and toss it in your sleeping bag. It'll stay warm after coming out the water and preheat your 'bag then if your cold through the night set it off.

AtoB magazine issue 88 did a review of a couple of pairs of heated gloves. One of the pairs had a heat output of 0.35W, which is sensibly close to zero.

They also tested the Zippo handwarmer that looks like a tiny hipflask and is powered by lighter fluid. Fill 'er up for 12 hours of heat!

I have a couple of the sodium acetate reusable instant heat packs, but have never got into the habit of carrying them with me in my bag. They generate a pretty decent amount of warmth for about 20 minutes.

hmm, clearly advertising works as I've just been looking at their site. Looks like you microwave them - and the cycling gloves aren't exactly ready yet. And they need a proof reader. http://www.alago.co.uk/research-and-development

My lobster gloves keep my hands pretty warm (at the expense of making me look like a mutant) but I could do with something for my feet... had the worst chilblains for ages this year

@Sallyhinch, the trick is to use them before the hands lose circulation to maintain heat. As you rightly say, heating up chilled hands could lead to chillblains, especially for those with poor circulation, however heated grips for example are fitted to chainsaws and quadbikes specifically to reduce the incidence of reynauds, chillblains etc.

I've got terrible circulation and I'd be wary of heated gloves (or socks) - that way chilblains lie...

It was an optical illusion but the cyclist's right hand looked like it went over the top of the drops rather than underneath in the drawing. Also no price??

These have existed for a while for skiing and such wintersports, I think aimed at people with Reynauds or other such circulatory afflictions. Perhaps someone's got a cheap job-lot of skiing gloves they're trying to shift as "cycling" specific?

It was in the finance section too... I mainly noticed it because it looked like something out of the classifieds blown up large - hardly a big budget ad. Maybe the Guardian advertising rates have taken a nosedive?

Speculate to accumulate! They've either done their consumer research and think it's worth it, or have fallen prey to the Guardian sales force. Time will tell . . .
