Hello all. Thought I'd just chip in. Glad someone's noted the Americanism :)

Just so you know, I cleared my presence on the cycle path with the Council. They're happy for me to be there. I'm doing free adjustments and help etc as you rightly guessed for a bit of publicity and to actually be helpful!

Anyway, have a look at my website if you're interested:

http://www.harts-cyclery.co.uk

I look forward to becoming a friendly and helpful part of Edinburgh's cycling culture. (A long time ago I used to be a courier, so what I'm doing now is hopefully more socially acceptable!)

P.S. I'm happy to fit customer-sourced parts too. No preciousness here!

Can't find any of the generic LBC service* threads, but thought I ought to take back my previous grumps about EBC service. Have been in twice recently and had very considerate, nice and helpful service both times.

*in the sense of service from sales staff, not getting the bike 'serviced'.

I have used EBC in the past but found them expensive. £25 just for a BB strip and regrease. My local bike mech (indy) put a new BB on for that last week including the Hollowtech 2 BB. He even collects and drops off the bike. He's just upgraded Josie's bike from V brakes to Disks. I have spare wheels and the brake leavers are compatible with cable brakes so it only cost £64 inclduing parts. He picked it up this morn and Josie just called to say he was dropping it off over lunch!

http://www.davesbikeshed.co.uk/

Great for those in Fife.

On the flip side - I went to Evans to get a "gold service" once and it was AWFUL. Over priced and they took ages to get it done. Badly indexed, they scuffed my frame (couldn't prove it though), brakes were a bit dodgey too.

I've used EBC before and would recommend again. They were ace. I shouldn't have gone to EVans - was a massive error.

I'd like to see a cycle-in bike cleaning service with a quick lube. Ideally it would cost about £5 (about the same as a car wash) and would have a cafe next door.

I noticed this new bike rapair service on offer at the ERC forum.

"32% off bike servicing for ERC members. "

It's run by Ayrton Pellet, a young racer. I haven't used the service but I've met him as we started a couple of years ago together with the ERC. He has improved somewhat more than me since.

I finally gave up trying to get my commuter bike into a good state of repair, after months of maintenance entirely based on conversations with friends, reading books and watching youtube videos. I could no longer get my front mech into the big ring, the shifter for the rear mech was difficult to operate, requiring significant strength to change it, and various other little bits and bobs were not ideal. So I booked it in for a £50 standard service with EBC, which they turned around same day.

I can honestly say that the difference between it going in and coming out is flabbergasting. I think they literally took the entire gearing system and brakes to pieces, needing on one area to drill bits off as they were seized so much, and sorted it out to such a degree that it seems like a new bike. For only an extra £30 for parts added in, it's the best £80 I've spent in a long time.

So I thought I'd mention it here for those of you who, like me, are not 100% sure about how to fully maintain their own bike, but who have a bike that needs some maintenance. The bike is 3 years old, but I can guarantee you that it won't be 3 years until I use their servicing again.
