My dad once had a letter published in Classic Car Magazine about the Get Carter car park.

True story.

@lionfish I'm sure at the time things like Trinity Square (and our own St. James Centre) seemed stylish.

If you don't believe that brutalism and concrete can be beautiful and stylish, it's worth spending a few hours hanging out in the Barbican Centre. Unfortunately there are few examples of such quality in the country, and some of the best have been left to rot. Barbican hides its car parks away in the bowels of the development.

Can't be many more ugly, soulless and depressing places in Scotland than the vast shopping barns and attendant car parks of Livingston.

"By the 1960s stylish modern car parks were incorporated into city centre shopping complexes such as Trinity Square in Gateshead" -- is that sarcasm?

Also the bluewater centre picture was depressing.

We hired a car to visit my nan at the weekend (in Hull), she has very limited mobility so the car would make it easier for us to take her places. But getting there and back felt so easy, on massive bits of asphalt stretching on, multilane roads in all directions... - it's amazing what a huge amount of public investment can achieve! Shame it was aimed so completely at roads :/ Imagine if they'd expanded the train/bus/bike network with just a quarter of that money...

Or, "how car culture made our world an ugly place"

BBC pictures article.

Of course, some of the earlier photos of art deco and modernist garages and services seem quite attractive, but just look at the aerial photo of the Bluewater centre if you want to be slightly depressed about what it has lead to!

I'll reserve judgement on Milton Keynes.
