...unfortunately, some would sadly probably interpret that as a good reason for removing the cycle parking entirely...

Perhaps any "designer" who is trying to create (or purchase) excessively fancy (but ultimately less useful) bike parking stands needs to be given a copy of the following quote as a reminder:

"Il semble que la perfection soit atteinte non quand il n'y a plus rien à ajouter, mais quand il n'y a plus rien à retrancher." -- Antoine de Saint Exupéry

I'm glad it's you saying that, and not a contractor working for a developer or the council. In the latter case, I'd be seriously worried as to what exactly they had "fixed".

May I recommend plodding to the 5k mark followed by an exuberant and determined effort to overtake everyone you can see in front of you for the remaining distance?

Yes, "wheel benders" were all I saw today so I did chain to the fence - staff actually advised me to do that.

There were lots of bikes there too and, like mine, these were chained to fences along the entrance points.

ah well.

still wheel benders, but with a fence round them, i would lock to fence. I think this is a designated area and is better than just the benders which was how it was when i first went, but no change from two years ago.

More stadium staff using bikes I think. Never seen a bike rack at a football stadium. the velodrome across from parkhead has some.

> Oh dear - I'm going to Murrayfield this morning and this is what my google search brought up! Hoping things have improved in the last 2 years.

I was at Murrayfield at the weekend and noticed some bike racks at the corner of south and east stands. They were of the type where you insert your wheel between two loops attached to a wall, so pretty rubbish. Better than nothing though. I'd imagine the new tram stop might have some racks too.

I've complained about the wonky racks around Bristol square before - where they are parked in a slant and I've found them very hard to use. But I used the similar ones by informatics the other day, were it is flat, and they were fine. Maybe even better than a Sheffield stand for a small wheel/frame bike.

They were - I was quite involved with all that, and the architects had a brief to make the building look modern and funky.

I just wish the bike store was policed slightly better - I notice the problems with the funky stands on the days I can't get parked because of all the stored bikes - and like Arellcat, I don't like leaving my reasonably expensive bikes outside (and I get seriously into trouble when I park my bike in the server room)

The bicycle store at the Informatics/DSB building has functional and perfectly ordinary Sheffield racks in it so I'm not sure why the ones outside the shed should be oddly bent.
Having said that, I had a peripheral encounter with the planning process for the Informatics half and I'm guessing that those racks were simply judged to look funky and stylish.

Much the same here, Tesco Corstorphine has a designated place for bikes, its at the entrance to the car park is a frankly rubbish rack. I generally lock up at the trolley park near the door, feels more secure but I doubt it really is.

Arellcat, I hate these kind of posts as they just remind me of the paucity of decent racks anywhere (although I cant vouch for sheffield itself ;-) ).

I had the (mis) fortune to be at Smyths toystore out at Fort/Kinnaird whatever its called at the weekend, and they have some shockers of wheelbenders too. Rather bizarrely, they are right next to some 'designer' handrails which are shaped exactly like a.........sheffield rack which is exactly where I would lock up.

These days I pretty much just go to my destination and look for something safe/strong and which works for me.

Even in my office, I have never used the 'official' racks (relatively decent though they are) because I prefer the car park/atrium barriers which are (again) exactly like sheffields, and closer to the entrance.
