that there Norway is quite good for cycling too

the cycling infrastructure in norwegian towns can be patchy

what is different is that motorists know their place

the accepted practice is to slow down and tread lightly around all vulnerable road users

motorists typically display considerable patience and understanding

borne of strict liability legislation, no doubt

Yeah, that there Norway is quite good for cycling too. Very good buses and trains too, if I remember rightly: last visit was seven years ago so it's probably even better now. Oh Norway has hills too, and fjords, and snow, and OIL.

Transport Minister Keith Brown is planning to visit the Netherlands to see how the authorities in Amsterdam have achieved cycling rates of 60%.

Great. We are in safe hands then.

Finland isn't too shabby for cycling. Neither is Sweden. Both have achieved 10% modal share. I suppose a high rate of cycling is just part and parcel of a civilised society. Darn, we're running out of Scandinavian countries to model a future independent Scottish paradise on, aren't we? Where can we find one with lots of lovely city centre motorways? A task for Keithyboy.

'Everything'?

It's a jolly. Cynical, perhaps, but he'll come back with all sorts of "We've learned a lot, there are lessons here for Scotland, we're going to look at what would be 'possible' to implement in this country" before a little while later things have descended into, "Netherlands? No no, they don't exist, isn't that where Peter Pan lives? Anyway, Scotland is going to be like Denmark, but not as highly taxed because we have all the oil money so our roads will be paved with gold and we'll all have giant billboards of Alex Salmond. Yeah, we'll be like a Scottish Denmark. What? They have loads of cycling too? Erm... What about Finland?".

Cycle campaigners say the Scottish government must increase investment in new bike routes if it is to meet the goal of ensuring that 10% of journeys are made by bicycle by 2020.

In recent years, that figure has been around the 1% or 2% mark. Transport Minister Keith Brown is planning to visit the Netherlands to see how the authorities in Amsterdam have achieved cycling rates of 60%.

So what lessons can Scotland learn from our Dutch neighbours?
