Yep, same guys who took on Earl of Marchmont, turned it round and sold it on a few months back.

The Waverley still going round the corner despite never having any customers except you. Also has upstairs lounge, closed.

As that pub has been there since 1749, it will have seen many changes. Good that it is still going

The White Horse Tavern on Royal Mile - a proper old fashioned pensioner's (his and hers) pub, with carpet in the toilets, an old lady who came round offering complimentary sausage rolls in the evening and 70s Hibs memorabilia on the wall was tragically gentrified a few years ago.

As hardware / ironmongery went. Grays was pretty gentrified. But we are using (or I am using) gentrified in the sense of a previous thread where Lawson's timber merchant's shop has become a trendy restaurant frequented by me (once) and wilmington's cow (once, unless he has more vouchers) bizarrely on the same night

Hang on. Gray's used to have a royal warrant (or two), which I doubt White Stuff has.

Are we using the term "gentrification" in a little applied sense of denoting a move in the class of the building's customers towards "the gentry" from the upper(most) classes? ;-)

Nice one.

I have a friend who works for Endura - magic, I thought when he started, he can get me some bikey gear at generous staff discount prices.

Sadly they are not daft, and he can only buy gear in his own size - and he is a titchy 5'6 inches and small built - so zero chance of a bargain for me!

I promise to make no more derogatory comments on White Stuff - Today I am chilled - all peace and love man ;-)

I quite like White Stuff's stuff, though only got a few things from there, and never been skiing (nor played golf, I'm not that gentrified). But I do lament the passing of Grays - I'd be in there at least once a month looking for something that would save me a trip to B&Q. Though I guess where I now work on Morrison Street there's a teeny hardware shop that goes so far as to sell second hand tools, which is great.

For proper technical outdoor walking/hiking/skiing-if-I-did-it clothing my sister's other half is a manager for a well-known and good outdoor brand on which she can get ridiculous discounts for family...

@gembo
Yeah, heard it. They played well but I couldn't find it very interesting. It just sounded shallow and inauthentic. Reminded me of The Commitments - young Irish going through the motions of playing music they had no real connection with from two generations ago.

When they were talking about how they all grew up together and are now 'sort of' friends, I feared they'd last about as long as The Commitments. (And I've only just realised Roddy Doyle's joke in the band name. Doh!).

Craghoppers are about to release their spring range too. Apparently it's time for that.

I just wait for the end of season sale as I have found that the same weather will come back next year. I like the 50-70% discounts more than having this year's colour.

Nelly I fear that you're criticising them for a claim they are not making. If you look at the history section of their website you'll see a reference to selling 't-shirts, fleeces and mad cow hats in French ski resorts' in 1985. That's as far as the ski references go. They don't claim to be anything other than a fashion label, no different from Fat Face or (my current favourite) Joules.

White Stuff are now only carrying spring lines on the website. I rest my case for poncey, pretend snowboarding apres ski nonsense.

I have no problem with fashion shops per se - but one of my mates was wearing their gear when we were in chamonix a couple of weeks ago - I know garbage when I see it, and would have been concerned if really bad weather had come in.
