"some people actually do need a car to fulfil their daily business"

Indeed, but then it's just a 'tool of the trade' - bit like a mobile (above!)

Mentioned with salary it's clearly a 'perk' which may or may not be a financial benefit.

I suppose this one will come with useful blue lights...

My next door neighbour has a company car, actually I don't mind the idea of a company car, some people actually do need a car to fulfil their daily business.

What does bother me a little is the huge jeep type things that are so inefficient, my next door neighbour has a V6 VW Touareg as a company car, which in my mind is just a waste of £45k. Appearnces can't be that important, surely, you can still 'look the part' (term used loosely), in a reasonablly efficient 3 or 5 series BMW. Although that car never moves at the weekend, they use a small Toyota as the family car.

'The tax payable on a 'status' company car is extortionate'

The big question for the new comms director is what to do re: fuel - he/she wont be taking the 'free' fuel as the tax charge is enormous.

However, given that the role encompasses Scotland, I imagine a lot of miles will be driven. And the maximum reimbursement allowable by the government (pence per mile) does not cover fuel costs (even in a modern fuel efficient car) these days.

I predict an expenses fiddling expose in a year or two !!

The tax payable on a 'status' company car is extortionate. For most it's just not worth it.

Hopefully the amalgamated Scottish Police Service means we now only need one Director of Somethingoranother on £80k plus company beamer rather than 7.
