Why else would anyone try to drive over that bridge without noticing the railings and so forth?

Because the central bollards had been removed—I assume for temporary vehicle access—and never discount the rat-run chasing enthusiasm of a motorist. Given that the bollards were absent for at least two days, I'm not surprised in the slightest that someone's tried to take a vehicle over the bridge and got it wrong. There's probably a car going around Edinburgh with a honking great scrape on its side.

Do we "blame" Sat-Nav? (Why else would anyone try to drive over that bridge without noticing the railings and so forth?)

I was going to post about this and forgot.

I too noticed that the barriers had taken a bit of a knock, but it has been knocked from "inside" the bridge, out the way, so if it was a vehicle it must have been trying to cross the bridge.

I think they have put the orange plastic fences up as they are absolutely determined to narrow the crossing on the bridge, come what way - looks like the metal removable bollards that used to sit in the middle of the gap have been totalled by the vehicle.

The thing was, the guy I spoke to seemed to be saying that the barriers were for when the bridge was up- ie the damage prevented the barriers closing fully. However, it also appeared that the bridge wasn't currently operating because of the damage, which was why reunion was there and not in the basin. Ether seems plausible, but not both together...

Funnily enough I bumped into steveo (not literally) on the bridge the other day and we were commenting on that. One of the metal railings looked bent over and I reckoned a car had tried to drive over (with a driver obviously, it wasn't doing it itself, unless it was KITT, but he would have just turbo boosted over the canal).

So I presume the additional barriers are to narrow the gap to stop more drivers attempting the same.

There are now orange plastic barricades attached to the 'new' black railings that further narrow the gap available to cyclists and pedestrians.

Nearby the reunion boat was loading and I had a chat with someone official-looking there, who said that there had been an accident with a car and the railings last week, which prevented them fully closing the bridge, so the orange barriers were being used (not entirely clear how or why).

Not impressed, but I guess it is a temporary restriction.
