I heard of one Mini which was disassembled, the bits carted into the owner's small bedroom, and reassembled in there.

Any owner of a classic Mini at uni was at extreme risk of it being picked up by 4 burly lads and relocated to the top of the hill outside one of the halls of residence.

I could tell you a story about being instructed by an officer of the law to "move" an illegally parked car with the rear bumper bar of my lorry ! You ever seen a mondeo with a hole the size of a football in the door, and two tyres ripped of the rims ?
Then there was the night many years ago, when our friends austin allegro moved itself from the pub carpark and found itself somewhere else, but that did involve students and large amounts of alcohol ! not big and not clever !
....small town boys, small town attitudes......
one of us actually did take a tractor to the pub !

It is interesting, in that it tends to demonstrate right of way/access has precedence over 'free' parking, and will occasionally be enforced with 'extreme prejudice'!

Oh and there are always some cars still parked up inside the cones even when the signs have been up for weeks.

I have noticed that if you want good access for pedestrians, roads closed, cars cleared and a good police presence, all you have to do in Edinburgh is schedule a soccerball match. Particularly if there are visitors through from the west coast.

Ah. It appears that cars will be moved to the pound if parked in certain places, or if parked somewhere cones and signs are put in place; whereas if it is short notice/no chance of putting up cones etc. beforehand then cars are omved to the nearest available street (which is what happened in this case).

Interesting. Assuming there must be some local regulation to allow the council to do that.

Yes, this happened to a friend of mine also living in Leith. His car was picked up and moved by the police at about midnight one night and dumped in a neighbouring street. IIRC, shortly before moving the cars the police went round at 11.30pm or so putting up notices on the lamposts saying that any car still there after 11pm would be moved.

They were clearing the street so that some Irish tribal parade could be routed down it.

Looks like there must be a general permission to do so where necessary without the giving of notice. Interesting. Where's Morningsider? I'll bet this is the kind of thing he'd know!

This is what the police call a street-to-street. They pick your car up and move it somewhere else out of the way. This happened to me when I lived in Leith and they decided to clear all the parked cars from North Juction Street to ease access to the Tall Ships (about 1994). No warning was given.

@wc it may be 90%, but that would still tally with my impresson that whenever I see cones/signs and most of the cars have been moved, there are always 1 or 2 still sitting there that have to be lifted.

I'd say generally that when signs or cones or both go up for works to take place 90% of people do actually pay attention to them - you'll always get people who willfully ignore them, as well as a percentage that for whatever reason don't notice them. But I think the majority do actually comply.

Must be slightly unnerving to come out and find your car (or bike, I've heard of them being moved for works purposes) gone!

Slightly odd this. One of my other half's colleagues came out of his house this morning to find his car gone - obviously thought it was stolen. Turns out the Council were repainting lines and had moved it (presumably by that crane thing for VED dodgers) - thing is, there were no signs up, no cones, no warning that this was taking place.

I don't think the car has been damaged, but I presume if the council are going to do this they have to give warning???
